Hey Jim,

you are right. I would expect s^2. But there is also a unicode sign “²” (U+00B2) .

s^2 is understood by all programmers. It’s [bc](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bc_(programming_language)) language and used this way in most programming languages.

> [@JimHatch](#):

> It can be done but it requires a user go to another program, create the superscript, copy the result and then paste it.

> Like this A=S²

However, [discourse](https://discourse.org) forums use the [Markdown](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Markdown) markup language (including [Syntax highlighting in markdown](https://support.codebasehq.com/articles/tips-tricks/syntax-highlighting-in-markdown)) which supports some html so entering

```html
s<sup>2</sup>
```

gives s2 🙂

“sub” is also availabe, e.g. for writing things like “CO2”. That’s how I used it to write things like this e.g.:

> [@Anyone using Huanyang GT series VFD?](https://forum.onefinitycnc.com/t/anyone-using-huanyang-gt-series-vfd/13083/12):
>
> According to IEC 60034-1, an electric motor shall be provided with a rating plate on which shall be marked the rated output. According to IEC 60034-1, the rated output is **the mechanical power available at the shaft** and shall be expressed in watts (W).
>
> For a [three-phase](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-phase_electric_power) [induction motor](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Induction_motor), this calculates this way:
>
> η = Pmech / Pelectr = Pshaft / (UN · IN · √3 · cos φ)
>
> where
> η (eta) is the [efficiency](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premium_efficiency),
> cos φ (cosinus phi) is the [power factor](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_factor),
> U is the rated [voltage](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltage), and
> I is the rated [current](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_current).

The downer is, when you copy it, the subs and sups do not remain ☹

Unfortunately unlike [MediaWiki](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki) software, the discourse forums don’t support [TEX](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TeX) ☹
