Hey John,

this sounds like the [z plunge issue](https://forum.onefinitycnc.com/search?q=z%20plunge%20issue). Maybe → [this](https://forum.onefinitycnc.com/t/x50-z-axis-randomly-plunges-into-piece/18727/2) and → [this](https://forum.onefinitycnc.com/t/my-x35-woodworker-seems-to-have-developed-a-mind-of-its-own/19306/2) will help you.

There exist many issues around the Z axis not doing what it should. See [Z plunge](https://forum.onefinitycnc.com/search?q=z%20plunge) issue. Some are caused by bugs in newer firmware, some by cable breaks in the ‘curly’ Z stepper cable, some are caused by [EMI](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_interference) due to the use of non-shielded stepper cables on the machine, and some by bit slipping due to the mediocre ability of the hand trim router’s collet to hold bits (in comparison to [ER collets](https://forum.onefinitycnc.com/t/makita-burned-up/23846/14) on [spindles](https://forum.onefinitycnc.com/t/spindles-lingering-questions/8643/6) and [43 mm “Euro” milling motors](https://forum.onefinitycnc.com/t/introducing-the-new-onefinity-elite-series-powered-by-masso/16706/115#best-milling-motor-solution-for-hobbyists-and-semiprofessionals-1)).
