How to Make Money with a CNC: 3 Proven Strategies That Actually Sell

If you’ve ever wondered how to turn your CNC into a real income stream, you’re not alone.

One of the biggest questions we hear from makers is simple:“What should I actually make to sell?”

With the power of a Onefinity CNC machine—known for precision, speed, and ease of use—you already have the tool. Now it’s about using it the right way.

After years of real-world experience, here are three proven strategies that consistently help CNC users create products that actually sell.

I have been making and selling things for about seven years now. In this video, I’m going to tell you what I believe are the top three ways to appeal to people in order to make sales.

What’s up guys? I’m Christy. Welcome back to the Onefinity channel! before we dive in, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren’t already. Clicking the little bell next to the subscribe button will make sure you are notified when we share a new video so that way you can stay in the loop.

Alright let’s countdown and work our way up to the best way to appeal to people to make a sale.

#3 - Make something that solves a problem. Here are a couple examples.

When covid hit, everyone was wanting one of those handheld key things that could be used to open doors or push elevator buttons without having to touch it with your hand bc germs were scarier then. I didn’t jump on this because I was too busy with a 3 year old and a kid who was doing e-learning from home (it’s a miracle I survived) but you get the point! These types of things were easy to do production runs with and were small, inexpensive to make, easy to ship, and were solving a problem. This type of product appealed to the masses.

I needed a display at a market I was doing so I used 3/4” plywood to make a display stand with adjustable shelving so it could hold examples of my goods for sale. This is a handy thing to advertise to crafters especially but also small businesses or boutique owners for displaying items in their retail spaces.

Another example of something I made to solve a problem was a stand to hold yoga mats and yoga blocks. The dowel going across would allow the mats to be hung up after a class and the space at the bottom allowed for the other yoga accessories to be stored. I designed this one so that it could be flat packed and shipped and assembled later with screws.

Functional furniture like planter stands, cubby lockers, or Montessori style stools and tables for kids are a great option for using an easy to access material like plywood to CNC incredibly useful things that so many people would find helpful.

Solving a problem is a win-win strategy and should not be overlooked. This method of designing means you are creating awesome stuff AND helping people. How good does that feel? I challenge you to take 15 minutes and sit down with a pad of paper. Try to think of a few things that are relatively simple designs that genuinely make some part of your life easier or more enjoyable. Remember that feeling and see how you might be able to create something unique to afford others that same opportunity to find relief or joy in some process in their life all because of something you made on your CNC!

#2 - Make something that fits the season. Seasonal and holiday items are huge, especially for gifting. For instance…

Mother’s Day is right around the corner and honestly, the stores will be putting out Halloween decorations before we know it so it’s never too early to start preparing ideas for holidays that are a few months away. After all, nearly 20% of all retail spending happens in just two months, November and December. Especially the few days that surround Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and cyber Monday. In that season, people are shopping aggressively for gifting purposes, and they are more willing to spend in Q4 than they are at any other time of the year. What does this mean for us? We have to have product ready to sell by mid November for the people who are wanting to shop for the holidays. It is not uncommon for small businesses to bring in a large percentage of their annual income during this time of year

what can you do right now? Focus on the season at hand – It’s time for spring sports and summertime fun is right around the corner. Start researching now what products sell well during this time of year, especially if you can find things that you can make using easy to source materials like project panels, fence pickets, and this (https://shoplowes.me/4uqvMrG) round blank from Lowe’s or a similar big box store. Things like planter boxes, porch signs, and door hangers are ideas that are easy to make from these materials.

Remember, not every facet of your project needs to be made on the CNC. You can always use it to make a simple to build project even better… Like make a planter box but make it something that can coordinate with a mailbox and so you can use the CNC to put the house number on it or to evenly drill holes for fastening hooks to hang plants. And another little tip… People like products that are relatable or funny. So if you are like me and really don’t like a solicitor coming to your door, design a porch sign that would indicate that solicitors are not welcome. Bonus points for making it funny like this idea here.

#1 - Make something that is customizable. If you can create one single item that you can then make many times by simply swapping out a custom detail, you have just found a sales loop. By swapping out a name or an address or a badge number, you can turn one design idea into countless sales. Here are some really good examples and I’ll save what might be one of the best custom things to make for last so keep watching:

Family name signs. You can make a bunch of these using the same design and just swapping out the last name. Add an established date to up the customization ante if you will. The customer got something uniquely custom to their family and you have the chance to really hone your process by making the same thing over and over again with a few small tweaks rather than having to reinvent the wheel to get another sale. Besides, with custom items like this that sell well you can make parts of the sign to get ready for sales and only have to add the customizations later. This also works well for kids name signs for their rooms!

Address signs! These are so simple to make and you can carve the numbers right into a cedar fence picket from the big box store and those suckers only cost a couple bucks each. Make your offering more unique by also customizing it with a last name initial or a property name. Ryan Suchy with @anotherpieceofwood created this simple address sign using some treated lumber and black paint. One design that can be edited and done again and again for future customers!

Double up with the last strategy and make customized seasonal items. Holy smokes. All the sports mamas love cheering on their kiddos and it’s fun coming up with ideas to honor some of the happiest memories of kids’ lives… playing sports is challenging for them but also very rewarding and can help their development in more ways than one. How about we celebrate that with a seasonal custom sign to let them know how proud we are! Christy made this baseball themed one for her son using this round crafting blank from Lowe’s.

Just think of all the sports that you could tap into using this round shape!

Lastly…. This one became very popular in the past year. Make it once and rent it out time and time again… marquee letters. Joey & Katie of @303Woods have become very popular and have made marquee letters for high profile clients! They make the back portion using their Onefinity CNC and finish the job at the miter saw.

Sometimes a company will buy a marquee sign and they will re-use it or you make one “GRAD” marquee and you can rent that out to multiple families with seniors graduating. Seasonal + custom is a sure fire way to make some money. And don’t stop at letters only, think numbers and party backdrops in general. The event and party rental scene is a great market to tap into.

I gave you my personal top 3 ways to make sales: make it solve a problem, make it seasonal, and most importantly make it customizable. But I fear you have a couple objections. So I want to help you with that too. Because I have been there. You might be thinking… but Christy, how do I find a customer? I can make these things but I can’t seem to find customers. It can be hard to try to put yourself out there and sell things. One of the best ways to get your name out there is to do some pro-bono work. You have to get visible. Find the right opportunity to do so (I’m not saying go make something for your grandma… although that would be super nice of you and you should do that) — make something for an audience that might have repeat buyers. Tell them you are trying to get your name out there and are looking for customers. Have business cards with your contact info ready to go. Put a QR code on it so they can easily find your website or social media account or portfolio. And the best part, the person or organization you are hooking up is going to love not paying for it and they are gonna talk you up! Plus, it’s a 100% deductible write off. I’m no accountant and you should always seek professional advice when it comes to your accounting but I will say unofficially, doing work for free is for advertising and advertising costs are 100% deductible.

Whew. Ok. What do you think? What’s holding you back? If you are feeling stuck, comment down below what your barriers are. If you feel like you’re in a good flow with making and selling things using your CNC, please also take the time to comment and share what might be working for you or other advice you could give to people who might be feeling stuck. The Onefinity CNC community is a great community to be a part of and there’s always someone who wants to help. Let us know what you think!

:speech_balloon: Your Turn: What’s holding you back from making money with your CNC?

The Onefinity has been the backbone of my journey bringing my own products to life.

This is a great post for those on the fence about starting a side hustle!

This is a great post and very helpful for a lot of people. Back during covid my company lost 85% of it’s sales due to company closures and i pivoted our strategy to create sneeze guards. We probably did about $600k in sales that year alone for that product. We emptied out our suppliers of polycarbonate constantly (we went with polycarbonate not acrylic for reasons). We probably priced too low but it kept me and my coworkers employed.

This was before I started using a onefinity cnc but it wouldn’t matter. I’ve cut up to 1/2" aluminum and 1.5" acrylic, the machine can handle it. Not at the same speed as a $100k machine but it still gets it done.

I’d rather have 3 or 4 onefinities rather than a $100k CNC
