Shuttle is school mascot. Wife is going to give them Tuesday. They came out pretty well.

Nice carve Dennis. Looks like it’s maybe poplar wood to me and could you tell me which ball nose bits you are using to get that smooth finish?

Thanks for the smooth finish complement.
The tag said it was Ash, but I agree it looks like poplar.
I used a 1/4 Amana Downcut which I am really impressed with and was cutting at 150 ips. However,I found the trick is to cut 3D finish pass only and cut at a 45 degree raster. Additionally, I add a 15 degree taper to my 3D images before programming the tool path.
Seems to give me smooth finish.
Could cut even faster on these soft woods, but I do a lot of hickory and slow it to 100 ips.

I just did up an old F-14 Squadron logo that I was in during Desert Storm. I am very please at how crisp and clean all of the lines and details come out inn just an old left over piece of plywood.

Very nice!
Can you give more information about jointcam?

What type of Jig did you use to mount the wood vertically?

David, Thanks, good question.
I think the following link will work.
JointCAM - CNC Dovetails and Box Joints (g-forcecnc.com)
or search Jointcam

The program is good. The Developer is very good and brilliant. Every time I use it, I have to do my homework again and study the manual. I don’t try and cut both right and left at the same time. I also slow down cutting speed, etc. You have to keep watch as to where 0,0 orgin is placed.

If I had the time, writing a simple guide, with example setups, called, ā€œJointcam for Dummiesā€ would be good.

Otherwise, for the work I do, Mortise & Tenon, Dovetails…are important. Please let me know if you go this route or find another way someday!

This does require a vertical set-up, please see AuntJ’s question below. William

Auntjemimma, Thanks for the question. The CNC has been an addition to the shop for about a year and a half now. I learn something new about it at each use.

Somewhere on this forum I have photos of my ā€œDovetail Pitā€ for lack of a better term. I slide several waste boards back and open up the pit. The clamp box below has holes to clamp boards squarely in the corner. Occasionally I have to add holes. I have to admit to not knowing about other options when building my table. So, far so good, just happy it works.

I’ve had my Journeyman for 3 weeks and just finished my first, offical project. It is my wife’s birthday present. The board is assembled from a kit. I used the Journeyman to carve the juice groove. Finally, I asked my wife what she would like engraved on the back. She gave me her two favorite Bible verses. I used my Glowforge to engrave the verses. Lucky for me I did. My design software did not pick a letter and a period, so they did not engrave. No problem, I just put it te planer, took off 1.16 inch and re-engraved. This is only my third board. My wife loves it! That’s all that matters. Now on to my daughter"s wedding decorations! (Wish me luck)

Cremation urn for the brother of a friend. Never fun to do, but happy with the outcome.
Onefinity used for the engraving and relief carving on the lid.

I’m sorry for the loss.

That turned out beautiful!

nice work! what bit do you use for the cutouts?

Haha trust me, you’re good! That table setup is awesome and I’ve been really impressed with it since I first saw you post. I’m on the QCW now so unfortunately no vertical milling, but if I did things again I’d be looking at something similar to what you have there.

William,

I am just finishing up my vertical portion on my cabinet and am just about to pull the trigger on JoinCam, I am just looking for some feedback from users of the software before I decide to do it.

Nice looking setup by the way. Thanks for the reply and if you do decide to write your jointcam for dummies guide please let me know.

I just noticed a vertical option for QCW listed under ā€œFeature Requestsā€. Maybe that will be of interest…

When the wife asks for numbered crochet stitch marker tags, you get busy. Since I didn’t want to have to deburr these little buggers, I cut from both sides with a 30 degree cutter to leave about a .005 chamfer around the edges top & bottom, then cut the profile with a 1mm end mill. Worked as planned!
