Hello all, I never used the dust collection attachment with my pro woodworker, as it limited my Z clearance and was a bit flimsy. I’m planning to upgrade to an 80mm spindle - and see a lot of options on Etsy for dust boots that connect directly to the spindle, thus moving up and down with the bit. I’m just wondering if anyone has purchased any of the available ones on etsy… and if you are happy with them. If you are happy with what you purchased, please provide a link. Thanks so much,
J
I am using the Hermes boot. Works great. Llok for it in this forum.
Same here, love the Hermes. Would never change it to anything else
I have been using the Suck It boot since day one and never had an issue. I upgraded to the Z20 slider with the 80mm mount. I have both 65mm and 80mm spindles. I CAD designed my own mount arms that are stronger and offset for the 80mm mount without using the spacers that came with the Z20.
it seems to me, based on the pictures I saw, that the Hermes also limits Z movement as it attaches statically to the Z slider and not the spindle? Is that correct? I am usually cutting stock that is large in the Z direction - say 4" or so. Sometimes my stock fits just below the Z slider base and would like an option that attaches to perhaps the spindle so that I don’t lose any Z clearance under the Z slider. Not sure if that is clear - but looking for an option.

I’m still waiting on my Woodworker Pro with the 80mm spindle. I have ordered this one from Etsy, but I’m curious if anyone has used it.
I use the nighthawk boot from Solafide design. I like it a lot but it can be a bit cumbersome to change bits sometimes if I’ve had the boot lowered to grab dust when using a small bit. It’s not enough to make me want to switch or anything, and I really like the ability to remove the dust hose whenever I want to clean up any stray dust.
In my experience, a dust boot that attaches directly to the spindle isn’t ideal for deep carvings, which I often do. Think about it: if the spindle-mounted dust boot moves 3" down during a cut, the boot—along with its brush strips—will likely collide with the workpiece.
For this type of work, a Z-axis-independent dust boot is a far better solution. In my opinion, the Hermes dust boot is the only way to go for this purpose. I recently carved several 3-inch-tall jewelry boxes and could easily adjust the Hermes dust boot to rest just at the surface of the material. This allowed the spindle to move freely without interference, even when cutting well below the boot’s starting position. And, all of the 1F Z-axis-independent dust boot solutions will always allow moving the boot above the bottom of the Z slider plate that you mentioned.
The Hermes dust boot also stands out for its excellent design. It provides exceptional dust collection because it fits snugly around the spindle, and features a large cavity that maximizes suction efficiency.
Ok thanks for the responses - I’m going to try out the Hermes.

I bought the suckit boot and installed it with my journeyman. Aftertesting that all axis worked, i turned off the machine and down came the z axis crashing into the suckit plate, cracking it. I have since traded for the Hermes and a braking z motor.
I am new at the CNC world of routers. After doing surfacing of my waist board and then spending a whole week cleaning I went with the double barrel Dust boot
works great. Can do bit changes very easily.

I looked at a dozen or so dust boot and this the I went with
Hope this helps
Cheers
Picking the features you want helps reason about what you want the boot to do (or not do).
This new suck it dust boot which hasn’t even been announced yet should have been prioritized because now everybody is scrambling to find a dust boot for the spindle because the ATC one isn’t ready yet or people are going to have to buy two dust boots now
I ordered this one in your video and it arrives in two days, I also have the Rapidchange ATC, can’t wait to see how it works out.

That’s great. Mine is still at customs and should be here soon too. Good luck to us both.

How does the dust boot know when to rise and lower?
It raises when the dust collection is turned off and lowers when it comes back on.

Very impressive! I really like the use of the stepper motor and is a very clean and simple design.
Which ATC do you have?
