I am attempting to do my first inlay. Obviously am doing some test pieces first. I have ran into a few issues and have a few questions. My first attempt I found that my plug was not sitting deep enough into the pocket and left a considerable gap at the bottom where the glue did not cure after 24 hours. I did a storyboard and found that my best results in CarveCo maker for the plug were a starting depth of .200" and a depth of .080". However when I made my more intricate plug for my final test the plug seemed to fit very snug and required some major clamping to get it to seat the best I could. I will cut into it tomorrow to see the results. How tight should these Inlays fit together? I am using a 4 degree but with a .05"mm radius. From what I read and see on YouTube, the depth settings are machine dependent and vary from machine to machine. Appreciate any advice in advance.
I struggled with inlays as well. I found that just a regular 90 degree vbit works well. I use Carveco as well. Try:
Female
Start =0,0
Max = ,11
Limit tool Depth is checked
Male
Start = .09
Max = .02
Limit tool depth is checked
Check out IDC Woodcraft on YouTube
Perfect inlays is what I think its caqlled
Hope this helps
My issue with a 90 degree inlay is the distortion of the inlay as you resurface it. I am going to try a few more things. Perhaps making the pocket fit my plug rather than my plug fit my pocket.
The tapered inlays as described above are the only way to get perfect no gap inlays in my opinion, no more work then trying to hit perfect straight sided ones.
