Change to Spindle Warm-Up Procedure (2/13/26)

Updated 2/13/26

Purpose of This Bulletin:

Following extensive customer feedback and an internal review of spindle warm‑up methodologies, we have identified a more effective procedure specifically tailored for spindles equipped with ceramic bearings, like Redline spindles. This bulletin outlines the updated process and the reasoning behind the change.

Background

Our previous warm‑up recommendations were based on guidance that, upon further evaluation, aligned more closely with procedures intended for steel‑bearing spindle assemblies. Ceramic bearings behave differently, particularly in terms of thermal expansion and lubrication dynamics—and therefore require a modified approach.

Through analysis and field observations, we determined that the earlier procedure did not include the necessary low‑RPM conditioning stages that help distribute lubrication evenly and stabilize the spindle thermally before higher‑speed operation. These initial slow‑speed cycles are critical for ceramic‑bearing longevity, noise reduction, and overall performance.

Previous Warm‑Up Procedure

  • 6,000 RPM for 10 minutes

  • 12,000 RPM for 7 minutes

  • 18,000 RPM for 3 minutes

Updated Warm‑Up Procedure (Ceramic Bearings)

To ensure optimal performance and bearing life, the following revised warm‑up sequence should now be used:

1. 500 RPM for 5 minutes

2. 3,000 RPM for 5 minutes

3. 6,000 RPM for 5 minutes

4. 12,000 RPM for 5 minutes

5. 18,000 RPM for 5 minutes

This staged approach introduces gradual thermal expansion, proper grease distribution, and a controlled transition into higher‑speed operation—conditions that ceramic bearings require for reliable, long‑term use.

!!! ATTENTION !!!

FOR BUILDBOTICS CONTROLLER USERS ONLY

You must change the Min Spin RPM in the Tool Configuration.

- Select the fly out menu

- Select Tool

- With Tool-Type = Redline VFD, Change min spin RPM from 6,000 to 500

- Select Save in the Menu column

This change has been made in the Spindle Control Method of the Spindle Kit User’s Manual v2.12
