Engraving on whiskey barrel slats

Has anyone ever engraved on a curved surface if so any tips or tricks I should know?

Not slats per say, but i have done quite a few carves on uneven wood before…like following the wood lines so to speak…something like that you mean?

I do not think that is what he meant. It is a convex surface rather like a bridge high in the middle sloping down to touch the table at both ends like this I think.
