Hello all,
Mike from the San Francisco Bay Area. I enjoy woodworking as a hobby and enjoy making stuff here and there for friends and family. Like Jake, I was looking at the Shapeoko XXXL as it seems popular and well supported. The Onefinfinity looks superior in build quality and I prefer to buy tools that will last. I have no prior CNC or 3D printer experience and am looking forward to learning and using the machine. Specifically, I’m looking forward to making some intricately designed wooden signs.

Fun fact- I followed Onefinity’s link to the Buildbotics website and watched their introduction video. When I saw them come out of the older yellow house with the detached garage, I thought, “That looks like a house that could be in Petaluma.” Sure enough, it is! I grew up two blocks away from the Buildbotics world headquarters! Imagine that!

Looking forward to learning from all the collective wisdom on the forum!

Hello OneFinity Family,

I’m 47 years old and have always been a maker at heart, bought the X-Carve when it came out and learned a ton about 3D carving. Easel is a great piece software to get your feet wet, and it did give me the itch to press on . I also own an Glowforge Laser Engraver as well as a XIDI 3D Printer.

My wife and I live in North Texas, where we are currently building our own Barndominium (An amazing journey were about a year and a half in, and getting dangerously close to be being done). I cannot tell you how many thing’s during the house build that I’ve printed, cut, milled that have allowed us to yield some pretty cool results.

Anyway, I’m so looking forward to my OneFinity (Sold my XCarve 2 days after my order #57 was confirmed). Can’t wait to see what we all create!

Great meeting all of y’all!
Cheers,
Alex

I’m glad I started this thread. I’m finding lots of common ground. I’m a Glowforge founder and quite active over on their forum.

Hi from NJ (central NJ to be more exact). Brand new to CNC (this will be my first) and Glowforge owner. Hoping to combine both for some projects to share.

Hey Mark,

Yep as a founder myself I love that darn thing. Still have some alignment issues as its one of the first units, but it is apparently not off enough for CS to have replaced it back then. I’ve learned to compensate for it though and have made some amazing things. I’m “alexmcclure” on the GF forum.

This is going to be fun!

My name is Stephen and I live in Iowa. The onefinity will be my first CNC (order#499) that I have owned. I went to college for tool and die, but shortly after college my career path took a left turn and I went through an electrical Apprenticeship. Years later I am an instructor at the same Apprenticeship.

I enjoy some hobby woodworking, and with the onefinity I am going to try to remember what I learned in college…

Have you tried running the alignment process? It took several tries but after it “took” I’ve got alinment that is within a kerf over most of the bed.

All these Glowforge owners are going to make it where there will be a common point of reference on a lot of things.

I’m Eric. I’m in Columbia, SC. I’ve been a mechanical engineer for 25+ years too, all in manufacturing. I’ve done lots of modeling, mostly with Creo, although I’m migrating to OnShape.

After preparing lots of designs for CNC metal fabrication, I decided to integrate CNC equipment into my woodworking. I’m surprised I waited this long😁

Morning Mark,

I ran the full alignment and it said it was perfect at the end (it wasn’t 9f course). So you found it beneficial to run it more than once until it actually was accurate?

Are you running the full calibration Dan launched about a year ago?

Thanks for the help!
Alex

I was hoping there would be others from SC

Yes.

Yes again, it takes some patience to run this multiple times but in the end, I got very good results. One of the main keys is to make sure everything is absolutely flat. Make sure there is not anything under your tray, nothing in your tray, a perfectly flat piece of stock. I used thick draftboard and then just kept remasking it for reuse.

Good luck

Thank you, I’ll definitely give that a try

I am a retired Colorado law enforcement officer after 44 years. I have been a long time woodworking hobbyist but this is my first endeavor with CNC. When it comes to being a newbie, I am truly at the beginning when it comes to CNC , electronics and computers. But looking forward to learning.

Where were you in Colorado? My dad was Aurora then Monument, then retired and moved to Missouri.

Will, from Rockville, MD. I jumped into woodworking about 2 years ago making wall art. Started with a jigsaw, then learned about scroll saws (I didn’t even know such a thing existed at that point) and got one of those. Had a goal of someday owning a Glowforge, but then learned about CNCs and realized that a CNC would be much more versatile. Totally stoked to be a part of this community and learn from you all.

Hello,
Steve, from upstate New York (Poughkeepsie), order#38.
Retired last year after 45yrs as a CNC machinist. Started
programming NC’s about 1975 before computers with straight G-code, then on to word base programming (Compact II) and finally computerized programming and design (Smartcam, Cadkey, Mastercam and SolidWorks). This will be my first CNC Router. Did a lot of woodworking when I was younger and getting back into it after retirement. My weak point is in the artistic and imagination area. Looking forward to seeing ideas and designs from others and learning new software.

sghawley,

not sure if you realize it, but with your experience, it sounds like you just volunteered to help 500+ new Onefinity owners in case of problems… :scream:

Looks like this can eventually take a laser too  So the best of both worlds-ish? Engraving for sure, not sure about cutting, fume extraction, laser cooling, etc… that’s another topic probably. Welcome! I’m fresh on the CNC boat too.
