Laser Smoke Reduction

I’ve developed a method that greatly reduces the amount of smoke in my shop generated by my JTech 34-W laser.

I sealed the bottom plate of my honeycomb to the main body with Gorilla Tape. This took care of the smoke that was billowing out from under the grid.

The magnetic cloth was purchased on EBay. It’s not very strongly attracted to the grid, so in some cases, I use helper magnets. It’s 0.020 thickness, and the 24 x 12 inch panels are cut lengthwise. The strips are butted right up to the edges of the wood. I’m going to get another panel to seal the rest of the honeycomb, although I didn’t see any smoke coming from the area to the right.

The black magnets are from LaserLok, a shop I found on Etsy. They can grip 3 mm or 1.5 mm ply well, even when placed atop the magnetic cloth.

The JTech smoke boot is connected to an AC Infinity 4-inch inline blower from Home Depot, which discharges through a dryer vent (also from HD) that mounts in a window. Don’t forget to close any open windows upstairs!

The Halloween bat turned out great!
