Longer motor cables

To ground the machine, I have seen in numerous CNC forums the practice of bolting a heavier gauge copper cable to the main metal chassis of the CNC (the 1F machines have many locations with bolts/screws), and taking this to a common earth ground point.

The question whether grounding the chassis comes up from time to time, we had this in Voltage Present the other day.

Surprise benefit to grounding your spindle

I wired my spindle with a proper shielded 4-conductor cable. The ground wire is attached to the casing of the spindle. The other end shares a common ground with the VFD and Onefinity controller. I found a surprise benefit is that if I forget to attach the probe magnet to the collet, the probe still registers through ground when touched and works normally- saving the tools from any damage. (It’s scary how many times I’ve forgotten to attach the magnet already!).
