Redline screen mouse

Hey guys. Having a growing issue with the redline on board computer. It’s is more and more losing its ability to touch the screen and the buttons stop responding. I’m actually seeing the mouse cursor moving around and it’s not listening to where my finger is pointing. I end up having to reboot and rehome the whole thing very often. Would you know a quick fix to this possibly?

I’ve tried blowing dust out, I’ve tried a Bluetooth mouse dongle (which is super annoying anyway since there are only 2 USB slots available) but still didn’t work. Rebooting is the only thing that works right now but it can’t even get a few minutes without freaking out. I’ve seen weird fixes of the wifi interrupting the signal or the dust collector turning on interfering but nothing reliable.

The standard “fix” is to resolve any static electricity issues. I implemented every static fix the y came up with & didn’t fix my HMI issues until they discovered that the VFDs were incorrectly programmed for US 240V circuits and had us change the programming. Most of my HMI issues went away then but I still occasionally get the wandering cursor or misaligned touch screen issue. I do as you and just restart everything.

If you get a fix, please add it to this thread. They have come up with new “fixes” before that they don’t publicly announce and existing users don’t necessarily see it.

I would say that OneFinity should implement the fixes. I’m amazed at not being setup for US 240V power, and yet selling the machines in US.

The equipment should be factory supplied to handle typical static with thorough grounding to a common stud which connects to building ground.

When they figured out the issue with the 240V programming, they posted instructions for those of us who already had the VFD & spindle to reprogram the VFD. At the time I believe they said they were updating the programming they were implementing for new shipments.

The static issue has been flogged to death and because it doesn’t happen to everyone, it has less priority and for some of us remains unresolved or only reduced but not fully corrected. The hardware could have prevented it but that costs a little more money. It’s like the Ford Pinto gas tank design decisions (for those of us old enough to remember that debacle :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:).

It’s a simple addition Redline made inside the HMI. A grounding strap (a small gague of wire) from the top of the usb port casing (scrapping off some of the coating) of the rasperry pi port to the grounding bus.
That’s all the magic is :stuck_out_tongue:

Apologies if this fix was posted previously and I missed it, but it’s been a busy summer. I’d love a photo of the fix, I’m more than happy to pull the HMI apart and add a grounding strap.

It certainly be better than the script I have running constantly in the background that resets the screen orientation. That’s all well and good but clunky and offends my sense of elegance.

The red arrow points to the strap ends. Redline has been putting these into HMIs for several months now. Remove the ethernet or usb cord from the pie before soldering on a wire to the outter shell.
Do this at your own risk!

If you are not experiencing EMI, have a newer HMI that already has this strap, or not instructed by Onefinity or Redline support, This strap is not needed. Do not open your HMI and make changes to your HMI if you value your warranty :slight_smile:

Thank you for sending the picture along. In regard to EMI, it’s been a considerable issue, I wouldn’t have written software fix to check the rotation state of the screen once a minute if it wasn’t a recurring issue. I haven’t harped on the issue publicly because I know everyone involved was working towards a resolution and don’t see the value in pouring gas on a fire folks are trying to put out.

I am not a lawyer, I do not know the intricacies of warranties as they apply in the United States when offered by a manufacturer in another country, but I do feel very strongly about the right to repair. Regarding this quote:

It’s generally understood under Magnuson-Moss that “Void if opened” stickers or statements may NOT void a warranty. Under Magnuson-Moss you are allowed to open and repair your property. Manufacturers remedies are limited to proving that any work performed damaged that property causing the specific malfunction that the consumer is looking to have repaired.

So in this particular case, if I opened my HMI and applied the grounding strap, hopefully improving my EMI issues, and three months later the power supply in the HMI died, while still under warranty, Redline would be required, if they are subject to Magnuson-Moss (which again I’m not entirely certain of) to prove that my opening the HMI and applying a ground strap in an un-related part of the equipment CAUSED the power supply to fail. I wouldn’t have to prove it didn’t they would have to prove it did.

With respect, yes, if you aren’t comfortable performing that type of work, work with the manufacturer to remedy the issue, but let’s not use fear and a generally misunderstood (and pushed heavily by manufacturers and their lawyers) concept that a “Warranty Void If Opened” policy has any standing under the laws of the United States.

In the latest firmware update, push the big red estop should ‘reset’ the touch back to vertical, similar to your script.

How do I know if my Redline HMI has the grounding strap or not? (without opening it up) I have quite a bit of EMI issues still, even after grounding my dust collector and machine.

You can carefully open it up and check.
