Single Wire Touch Probe

I’ve read here, several topics about after replacing a router with a spindle(Redline in this case), the spindle has a PE wire that is end to end connected and provides the VFD ground at the spindle casing. I’ve ohm checked my setup and that is correct.

On the Masso side, my touch probe is connected to the connection on the back of the Masso labeled touch probe. When ohms checking the ground side of that wire to the chassis ground it shows no direct connection. Since the touch probe is a pull-up / pull-down circuit simply applying a ground will not complete the circuit. Connecting the Masso digital ground with the chassis ground is not a good idea.

My question is: can the touch probe be ran with a single wire and if so how? I think we would all be happier if we didn’t have to remember the magnet.

I think the issue may be that the -ve on the Masso wouldn’t be connected to your VFD ground (it’s also no connected to the back pan of the display) so you’d need to connect the two ground of the power supplies (which would be on separate circuits) together which could cause issues.

Based on the Masso documentation it looks like you should be able to do this (Probing Touch Plate) as long as the -ve referenced below is the same potential as your VFD ground/chassis ground.

Yeah, saying the same thing. As long as the reference is not the same the circuit can’t register. I think I’ll pose the same question to Masso and see what they say. Thanks BTW for the diagram and answer.

I wonder if you could just run the magnet wire through the drag chain up to the spindle, and just attach it attached to the spindle. Or do the electrical equivalent with wire and some way to affix to the spindle.

Not sure if there would be any interference doing it that way…

This would end up effectively connecting the two ground which I wouldn’t recommend.

One thing you could to is have a flip down probing pin that is connected to the Masso probing circuit and use that for probing rather than the tool. I have this on my list of things to do when I put my OPT laser on.

Thanks. I’ve thought of the straight through wire but as you say it would connect both grounds. I’ve heard back from Masso and they basically said this is an answer that should come from Onefinity. So I’ve submitted the same question to Onefinity and also ask for a definitive grounding setup. We can only see what they say. Thanks for your replies.
