Touch probe not working with certain bits

Hello all. First post! I haven’t seen this exact issue so I’ll ask my question.

I am able to perfect xyz perfectly fine with my fancier upcut end mill bit but when I use a vcut bit from one of those amazon bundles the probe doesn’t seem to pick up the bit so what happens is the x probing just pushes the probe off of the work piece. Anyone else have this problem? Any known solution? (buying nicer bits is a fine answer).

Thanks!
Brian

Hey Brian,

I use a .250" steel dowel to probe every job for X and Y and Z. Then I put in the cutter I’m actually using, and probe the Z height.

I understand the necessity and concept for V bits, but could we discuss a situational bit; say a 90deg groovee jenny.

Would/should this bit be set as a 3/8 V or 1/4" V bit in our tool settings? After probing z, does the tool lower more or less than 3/8" below the z=0, to probe the shaft for x/y, or is it similar to a V probe process? thanks

This is the workaround I figured out for myself. I wanted to know if there was another guiding principle in this forum to follow.

Thanks!
