Advantages 80mm vs 65

Regarding the new Redline spindles, what (if any) would the advantage be of the 80mm 1.5kw over the 65mm? I would need to replace my 65mm slider and really good dust boot which would be about $250 and am trying to determine if that is needed. Thanks.

Bigger is always better. Did the 80mm and will never look back.

The bigger spindle also allows for a larger collet which will accept larger bits.

The 80mm spindle can accept a 1/2 shank bit - the 65mm can not. That was what sold me when I placed my order in November.

Also, I read on another website that being bigger and heavier, the 80mm has better cooling than the 65mm. I don’t know if this is true but it sounded reasonable.

Bigger bits mainly applies to going to the larger 2.2kw spindle and the ER20 collet. If you have no need to use 1/2" shank bits or the extra power then a 65mm 1.5kw spindle would most likely work fine. Going as big as possible is a good way to future proof your setup.

Future upgradability. I got a 65mm spindle and now I need to completely replace my z slider to get the 80mm. Should have sucked it up 2 years ago and got the 80mm so the upgrade path to 2.2kw would have been easier.

That said, 1.5kw @ 65mm is perfectly fine for most light weight applications.
