Carveco Pasted 3D Model Relief vs Tool Path Simulation

When I look at the pasted 3D model relief in Carveco, it looks nearly identical to the original 3D model. But when I simulate the calculated tool path, it adds in these cliffs. There are similar features in the relief right next to them that don’t have cliffs. I’ve included screenshots of the gold relief and the silver tool path simulation. Why is this happening? Is there a setting or some kind of parameter or something to fix it? @RobNewman @OnefinityCNC

You have a ball nose bit selected. When it’s cutting the deeper sections, the bit will be cutting those vertical cliffs. Try running the simulation with a tapered ball nose.

Thanks for your response. I recalculated the tool paths with the exact bit and redid the simulation, but it looks close to the same.

Could it be the model has undercuts that bit can’t reach during the simulation ?

The pasted relief in Carveco has already removed any underlying geometry and polygons from the original 3D model that a bit could not reach. The process is basically going from a 3D model, to a pasted relief, to a simulated tool path. The tool path is not matching the pasted relief enough. Carveco should be doing a better job of raising, lowering, and tapering this part of the tool path simulation. I’m pretty sure the bit would even fit in where the cliffs are. I wonder if there is a setting or parameter that can be changed to essentially remove this cliff.

Try using the offset toolpath. That should eliminate those ridges. Alternatively, you can decrease the stepover. In either case, the carve will take longer.
