I too have been recently experimenting with cutting aluminum i needed a 1/2 inch groove a total of.125 deep. After a few tries I found that using a zero flute or single flute 1/2 bit for milling machine in a profile toolpath, at 15000 rpm, and depth of pass at .015 works perfectly the plunge rate I am using is 10 ipm and I am using 6061 aluminum. here is the link to the bit i used which i got on amazon.WEXWE Tools Solid Carbide CNC Spiral Single Flute End Mill - for Acrylic Plate Aluminum, Wood, Plastic, Brass, Copper Cutting - 1/2 Diameter 1/2" Shank 3" Length,1 Flute (1/2-3" 1PCS): Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific as you can see about a 30 dollar bit not bad considering how much the cnc people charge and it work at these settings takes 8 passes oh and the feed rate is 25 IPM. hope this helps.
