Since I added the Y rail spacers to accommodate the 4th axis rotary, and raised the Z Axis to its highest position, I can no longer lower the suck It dust boot far enough when I’m doing cuts on thinner material (3/4" thick wood, for example.) As a result, the dust collection is mostly ineffective.
I could probably figure out some way to make my own longer arms for the Suck It, but I was wondering if anyone else already came up with a solution for this.
Since you’re referencing “arms” it sounds like you’re using the original Suck It dust boot?
If you’re using a spindle, I will say the newer Suck It SM dust boot doesn’t have this issue, at least where I have my spindle adjusted height wise it doesn’t, but that’d be $75 to fix and only valid if you have a spindle.
The second thing that came to mind is are you using the 1" bristle or the 1.5" bristle? If you’re using the shorter one, the 1.5" would get you down to about 1/4".
I am using the Suck It dust boot Pro that I ordered with my original X-50 Woodworker about three years ago. I’ll look into the newer Suck It SM and see it that might make a difference. I am using a Redline 60mm spindle.
I was unaware that 1.5" bristle was available. that might also help, but I think having the vacuum hose closer to the workpiece would be the best option.
It’s not a question of the spindle being low enough. Lowering the spindle wouldn’t lower the dust boot. I could lower the whole Z-20 slider by using a different set of mounting holes, but then I’d have to raise it again every time I want to use the 4th axis rotary .
The original dust boots were attached by arms to the slots on either side of the spindle mount, as opposed to a friction fit on the spindles themselves.
Follow-up: I’ve used the new Alien Woodshop dust boot with several cuts now, including with the 4th Axis rotary. It does an excellent job of collecting dust, and the magnetic removable lower brush section allows fairly easy access to the collet for bit changing. The long brushes give a good amount of leeway, so that as the bit lowers into the stock there is less chance of collision of the boot itself with the stock. It’s a bit trickier when doing a 4th Axis rotary for obvious reasons, so I just set the dust boot a bit higher than the end of the bit, and that has worked very well.
