Inexpensive material for testing pockets

I find myself tracing real world objects, and making pocket cuts to fit them in. I often test out the carve on a piece of scrap to make sure the trace is accurate and not too snug. What is the least expensive material for me to do this in? Scrap is obviously the cheapest; but if I don’t have a scrap large enough, what is the cheapest?

More info: these items are usually small (2" x 6"), other times they are slightly larger (8" x 12"). And I seldom need pockets deeper than 1".

One cheap material I have used is cedar fence pickets. That’s fine if I only need 5-1/2".

I use MDF for testing.

I’ve also used EPS foam for testing
