Leather Branding Iron

I have milled a 12mm thick, 50x50mm brass branding iron for my Sister-in-law who has a leather craft business on the Scottish Island of Islay (great place to visit if your a whisky fan like me, especially during the week long festival in May).

12mm thick to give me tapping depth. M10 thread. Hand turned box wood handle held in place with super glue.

First attempt at a branding iron and using it.

Milling: 60 Deg V bit with 4mm flat depth. Clearing with 3.175mm mm bit before the v bit. What you see is the only piece I made.

The small letters exceeded my expectations when branding. I thought they would be too small to see.

Three examples of leather represent my three attempts, varying how long I held the hot brand on the leather. Needs some experimentation to hone the heat/duration parameters.

That’s an excellent result, especially for a first try. I like how the branding looks better than laser engraving on leather. Consider using a drill press to keep the pressure uniform and the branding iron level.
