I am working on a repeatable process for 2 sided machining. So far so good. Let me know what yall think.
How did you sand the interior? Concave surfaces with steep edges can be a pain.
What a great idea! Why two sided?
Hi @GeraldSmith . I should have clarified. Working on a two sided repeatable method using Fusion 360 but of course this is only 1 sided Sorry to confuse…
Hi Jim
I used a 1/4 ballnose @ .008 and it really hardly needs sanding. That pic is straight off the mill
What was your hold down method? Is that green wood?
Cool. I’ve used .008 stepover before (I’m assuming that’s what you mean) and was pleasantly surprised how smooth it turned out. Though I was afraid I might be dulling my bit a little, it was almost like the high speed and small stepover ‘polished’ the wood.
If you want to try something slightly different (and own a bandsaw or chainsaw) cut the log roughly in half first. Put the flat side down and remove part of the bottom to make a flat spot for the bowl to rest on. Flip it over and then carve out the bowl. You’ll remove the pith so the bowl will not crack and have a wavy lip on the bowl.
Thats a great idea and have thought about that as well.
Yes thats what i meant.
Hi. I put 2 screws in the bottom making sure to note length. I also used a piece of plywood as a scrap spoil board. For a better finish on other bowls i have made a jig and created a place on spoil board to friction fit the bottom of the bowl.
