and yet it has never in over a thousand jobs happened to the very same system sitting two feet away using the same power in the same garage except controlled by Masso. something is wrong with this answer. I do not know what but can you explain why it is different?

The UPS would smooth out the voltage but not solve the E-stop wiring issue.
I think that a relay designed for the 220 voltage could be added to the machine so when the Estop is activated all power both 110v for the controller and 220v for the spindle/VDF would be shut down. (But then again I’m no engineer)

Some of you may only see this issue intermittently. This is because it only faults like this when it reaches a certain voltage over the 242v allowance.

Please pay careful attention to your spindle and the DRO as you approach the spindle. The DRO will show you the spindle is still on. If you see flashing numbers on the DRO, then the spindle is off. Solid numbers = spindle is on.

There is no problem with the E-Stop. Again, this is a problem with the processor inside the VFD from the manufacturer. When volts exceed the allowance of 242v, the processor malfunctions. This malfunction causes the VFD not to receive any commands to stop or reduce RPM’s of the spindle.

We are not asking or telling customers to purchase anything additional to help eliminate this issue. We are working with the VFD manufacturer to resolve the issue. Please be patient.

but in the meantime, we have multi thousand-dollar paperweights sitting in the garage. how about a recommendation of a power regulator, we can use so that our machines can be operated safely while we wait for the final solution to this problem? I don’t want to place any blame I want to use my machine safely. Having The use of it is more important to me than having to spend a few bucks to get it running (safely)again.

BTW this issue has been around since 2021 before Redline as mention in a previous post.
So from a schematic diagram scenario, E-Stop should be primary switch to all power for the machine otherwise it’s redundant and serves no purpose.
I worked in a high school wood shop for 25 years.
Every machine had an E-stop (some more than 1 -my CNC machine had door switches wired as well)
We also had a main contactor that killed all power to every machine with 6 additional E-stops around the room.
I’m surprised 1F got a CSA UL certification for a machine that’s not compliant.

I am using the Redline 220V VFD and have also noticed an occasional lockup of the screen. Never thought to check the voltage on the VFD but will do so next time it locks up. But then, if it is transitory you could only tell with constant voltage monitoring. I am wondering if the VFD puts out an err code for this situation. I am pretty sure my old Lapond HC800 VFD would report this condition.

You could track with something like a Killawatt but I don’t know how on 220v. Pretty sure it will log highest and lowest voltages. They aren’t expensive for 120v.

from what i am seeing yes a simple spike and bingo you are locked up tighter than a bullfrogs butthole.

I have finally been able to talk to my electric company, and they say the national standard is max 250v to the house, and I am at 249v, so within specification. They cannot address this since it is within standard, so I am also waiting for redline. I was hoping the power company could do something.

you would think that since this is a standard known max the VFD manufacturers would have designed for it instead of the lower figure of 242 . duh!

Agreed. Nominal “220” voltage is really 240, and a +/- 10% would allow higher than the stated 242 volts. Something doesn’t sound right.

Edited to clarify the 240 volts is standard in North America, or US at least. The equipment should still handle more than 242

I have upgraded Journeyman Elite with a Masso control and a Redline 220v spindle.

I have had 2 instances of the spindle not stopping at the end of a program and would not respond to any MDI spindle commands. I had to power cycle the VFD to regain control. Just checked my voltage. It’s 246v-249v (checked with 3 VOMs).

Sent an email to Redline support.

I suddenly feel like I have kicked a hornets nest.

It’s good information to have out there and will help folks out, rather than wondering if it happens to them, at least there’s a known issue.

I started w/the 120V spindle then decided to p/u a 220V while it was on sale. So now I know to watch what’s going on and if I experience this issue I’ll be able to check for it.

I also think the discussion surrounding mechanical cut off of power for the E-Stops is valuable and relevant and has remained civil, which is nice to see.

No sense in getting angry over it. It won’t help anything. but it is frustrating to buy a machine you cannot reliably use. the last thing my garage needs is a really expensive paperweight. Onefinity’s assertion that this is solved does not help anyone. Since it is far from solved. It is recognized not solved. None of us has the ability to regulate what power comes out of the wall. That will take a bit of technology. i looked on amazon for a reasonably priced power conditioner that i could simply plug into the 220 outlet and then plug the VFD into it. most seem to need to be hard wired in by a sparky. or are not fit to do the job we need doing. So, I am waiting for redline to come up with their fix. I was willing to pay about a hundred bucks just so I could actually use my brand-new machine while I wait, but there really is not anything I could find to do that job. And I am sure as heck not going to pay for a UPS that costs 900 dollars.

It’s a smart hornets nest to kick. I’ll say it here as I said to redline support. There should be some form of cautionary statement issued by Onefinity before someone gets hurt. I have seen what a spinning bit can do to a hand or a finger. It’s not about hurting feelings or demeaning anyones product. It’s about a valid safety concern that should be brought to the attention of everyone involved, responsibly.
