Outdoor sign joint durability?

I am creating a 2 ft x 3 ft lawn sign out of 1-1/8 in white oak. It will be a 3D carve with a max cut depth of 3/4 in. To make the workpiece, I am planning to edge join multiple boards with Gorilla wood glue Ultimate.

I have not made an outdoor sign before and am wondering about the durability of the glued joints. Is just gluing adequate or should a supplemental method be used to join the boards (ex: dowel pins)?

It is not the joint type that matters so much as the finish you use on the sign. Whatever you do to the front of the sign, you must also do to the back and edges. Water and sun will wreak havoc on the sign if you don’t seal it properly. there are many types of sealants. Look up weather proofing an outdoor sign and act accordingly. Good luck.

Halcyon, that’s what I use for those wooden outdoor signs, if it has to be wooden

Thanks for the feedback.

that is what the forum is for. glad to be of help.

So this house sign was made back in 2007 that has a southern exposure
It’s Curly Maple
Every year it’s sanded and recoated with West System Expoxy
This year I’ll need to repaint the letters with one shot sign paint before recoating
But I think it’s stood up pretty well given the Southern Ontario climate
