Please Help Z axis forgets where its at (I think)

Over the winter I retro fitted a drag chain across the machine and bought the extension cable from onefinity to neaten everything up. I have og machine. I kept the coiled wire zip tied up behind the router because apparently you have to have it. Well I thought I’d eliminate the all causes and I by passed the extension and put the coil back to the factory location and plugged into the controller with the short wire that came with the machine. The machine is so far running as it should. I feel that it maybe a loose wire in the extension as the plug ends on it are not near as rigid as the originals. I haven’t pulled the extension out of the drag chain to see and honestly if I don’t have any more troubles it’ll prob live out its days in there. The z is back running off the coil cable and factory pig tail instead of the extension. Thanks everyone for all the help , all the replies helped me get my head wrapped around it to start troubleshooting. Fingers crossed it stays going I’ll prob run several programs before cutting anymore expensive plywood just to be sure lol.

A little update just incase someone sees this post and it may help. The machine has run flawlessly deep into last night (making up for lost time with lost sleep) and most of the morning. I’d say without a doubt it was that extension cable. So it will be the coil cable from now until there is an extremely better alternative. Do I love it no ,but I need it to work and function properly and now it does so it is what it is. Thanks again for all the replies to this post

There’s one other thing to check. I found that my Z axis can move when the game controller is first switched on. The fix is to rapidly flip the z axis up/down joystick and it stops moving by itself. The problem is if you have the tool parked high and in slow mode, then turn on the controller for some reason, and a few seconds later, start the job. The Z can move very slowly down into the job in excess of the Z requested by the gcode.

The “auto Z” effect from the controller does not happen often - perhaps 5% of the time - but it’s real and I have learned to check for Z movement before starting jobs.
