Are you using a grounded spindle or have you grounded the frame? Some users have reported the probe polarity is wired such that when you attach the magnet to the spindle it completes the circuit and completes the probe cycle.

In this case you got to wire the plate end of the cable to the positive pin of the probe socket on the controller, as explained here.
