QCW Tube & Extrusions Problems

Hi folks,

Recently, I was sent a QCW frame and rolling table. At first, I could not assemble the frame and found that the holes drilled through for the extrusions were not aligned with each other making it impossible to assemble the frame.

I received new tubes from Onefinity and assembled the frame only to find that I was sent two different types of extrusions that I didn’t notice a first, two extrusions having thicker metal than the other two on the top, sides and bottom of the extrusions (see pic).

As a result, when the frame is assembled, two of the extrusions sit higher than the other two making it impossible to get a flat surface.

At this time, I’ve sent in the issue with pictures and am waiting for a response.

Support staff seems to feel the extrusions are fine and that I should put the waste board on and remove enough material to make it flat. Most likely, I’ll have to remove about 1/2" from one side in order to accommodate the other side.

Seem reasonable?

How does a minor thickness discrepancy translate to a half inch removal? I would assume you would still be in the 1/16th range

When the extrusions and waste board slats are installed, two sit up higher than the other two. When a straight edge is placed across the frame, the straight edge rocks up to 1/2".

That sounds like the frame is twisted or something else like maybe the pipes that the t track or the t-track itself is bent… No reason that it should be that far off.

I was shocked to see how far out it was myself. I think it works out that when some angle is out and you take that across a larger distance, the gap gets bigger.

I have to agree with Dean as it sounds like the amount is being exaggerated by something else being out of whack. Flip a few of them around to other positions and see what changes… A straight edge across 16" would only be out by 1/2" if one of the mounting hols was substantially off not from a fraction of a mm thickness difference in one rail. There is definitely something Amis that would be very frustrating to find I am sure.

Across the frame is 36" and almost 4 feet from corner to corner. I have flipped them around in various positions and have found the same thing. I would have to agree with you that something else was amiss considering that it should not be out so much, but that’s what it showed.
It’s more than a fraction of a mm with the thicknesses of the metal, measured to be around 3/32" on top and the same on the bottom. When pressed up against the tubes and secured, they sit higher by the same amount which causes enough of an angle to be out by 1/2" on the other side of the frame.
New extrusions are being shipped to me so I’ll know if they work or not and if something else is wrong. Should be getting them middle of next week and I’ll put in a update when I assemble the frame again.

Have received a full set of new extrusions similar to the thin gauged rails in the pic. After installing them in the frame and adding the waste board slats, I placed a straight edge across and there was no rocking other than a tiny bit from one corner to the other, almost negligible. Huge difference from the mismatched extrusions originally received. Really looking forward to getting at my list of projects. First up, carvings of Picasso’s sketch of “Don Quixote” on a 12"x16"x1/8" Melamine.

Good to hear… I am waiting on my Journeyman QCW (from above) right now… Hopefully just a few more weeks, before I am able to stop fiddling with my set up and spend 100% working on projects…
