Whine when idle - is it normal? (solved - yes, idle current)

New machine and I don’t know what’s normal - the motors (as nearly as I can tell it’s the motors) have a whine when the machine is idle - sounds similar to an electric drill that you give just a little bit of power to, before it can spin.

Normal?

It stops/changes if you hit the e-stop.

Everything works great, so probably expected…

Normal. It’s idle current that holds the motor in place while not moving. Estop kills power, which is why the ‘whine’ goes away…you’re removing the current.
