4th axis placement

Hello all, I have a gen 2 journeyman batch 2 on order. I already have the 4th axis revolution. what I want to know is should I build my table so that I can lower the section that holds my 4th axis revolution in kind of a trap door thing. I want to know if I should do this so that I can get more z height or will this screw up everything? I want to make a trap door and either have the 4th axis in it or place it in the “well” so to speak? If it is acceptable, how much lower should I set the 4th axis?

wow not a single suggestion or reply for anyone. Not even Onefinity? Is there no good answer to this question? I am about to build a whole new table. I need some ideas before my batch two gen 2 comes in.

63 views and not a single idea or suggestion. hmmmm am I barking up the wrong tree here?

I am in the same position too. I have a Journeyman 1st gen and a rotary, which I have not setup yet. I think that building a trap door is too … complicated. It also have to be quite accurate to be repeatable. I would be happy to read what other people think about it or came up with already.

@HardtailSr I built a system many years ago for someone else on a non Onefinity machine that lowered and raised into the table using two linear actuators and 4 linear rails. They used to make spindles and balusters for staircases. They could raise it 6” above the table or 2” below the table independent of the machine. I think they used to run with center just above the wasteboard and when not in use they covered the hole with another piece of wasteboard material to have a flat table. It was in use for many years until it was replaced with a purpose-built machine for their needs. I don’t think they ever had a problem with having the rotary stored permanently under the table and this gave them more Z travel when they needed it. Unfortunately, I never got any pictures of this unit. I had planned on doing this again if “I had ever gotten a 4th axis for my X50pro but that is no longer in the cards for me. May or may not be a solution for you but at least I responded. I hate it when no one responds to a question. Good luck with you new Gen2. I wish I could upgrade.

Here is how I placed my rotary below the tablehttps://forum.onefinitycnc.com/t/onefinity-elite-foreman-table/32516/11?u=ken5

@CalgaryD Repeatability is easy if you use locating pins when you install the rotary. You just need to remember that when you resurface your wasteboard you need to have the door installed so that it gets surfaced as well.

Thanks to all that responded to this post. I very much appreciate it. I have decided to try yet another method and I will post the results as soon as i get my gen 2 set up. I will just say I am involving a lift table. It looks like I will be needing yet another atc later on. This is getting expensive again lol.
