50mm rails for Elite Journeyman

I would like to have 50mm rails for my Elite Journeyman Y rails. I assumed that they would be the larger rails when I purchased it. I could also purchase the 50mm Y rails for the Foreman and return the the 35mm Journeyman rails. Is this available?

What benefit do you think the larger x50 rails for the y axis for 32” span would give that you are not getting with x35 y rails?

I 2nd that. I would also like to request to upgrade my X35 Y rails with X50 Y rails for my Journeyman. I don’t need to 4X4 cutting area and Journeyman is the perfect fit for me. However, I feel the original X35 Y rails were built for X35 X rails. Since then I have upgraded to X50 Y rails along with stiffy and an 80mm spindle. The X35 rails that were meant for X35 Y rails are now carrying the load of X50 rails with stiffy along with added weight of Z20 slider and 80mm spindle. I feel the added weight on the X35 produces deflection in the middle… I am not technical person but that’s just how I feel.

What price would you pay for the upgrade of x35 woodworker rails to x50 woodworker rails?

Hey all,

it’s a question of length and number. The Woodworker and Journeyman Y rails are 800 mm long, and there are two of them, so 35 mm rails are strong enough. The X rails on Journeyman and Foreman are 1200 mm long, and there is only one of them, so are 50 mm thick.

Foreman is 1200 x 1200 mm, so both are 50 mm thick.

I am curious if we actually have numbers to support these claims. So far I have only seen the input data, some. What about actual deflections.

So, 0.08 mm on X35 rails for a Woodworker with an X stiffy and a spindle. Thank you for this. I guess, I want to measure my setup now…

The more data the better. It also makes a difference where the Z axis assembly is - closer to the Y rail being measured with indicator = (slightly) greater deflection.

As I understand, you currently have X-50 Woodworker rails for IPP. If the X-50 Y Rails can be offer under the same program, with the same price range, I would be willing to make that purchase. The price could be further reduced if the upgrade requires the consumer to use the currently installed Masso motors for the Elite machines.

However, if your data shows that X-35 Y-rails can handle the added weight of X-50 Journeyman rails, along with Z-20 assembly and 80mm spindle, then I would be content with the current setup. As I stated earlier, I am not very technical person and have not done any testing or has any data to show if there is a real issue. This is a strictly hobby machine for me.

Good discussions and questions. I would suggest you purchase a dial test indicator and base, and conduct a simple deflection test yourself. Your data will be more meaningful, since there are many factors that can affect results - such as the table - and these will vary from the machine setup of others, even Onefinity’s.

So, Journeyman with no stiffy and Makita router installed: -0.14 mm deflection when the gantry is in the middle of the Y-axes relative to the gantry fully at the back.

Seems consistent with -0.08 mm for lighter Woodworker.

Thank you for the data. Was there a change as the Z axis assembly changed position on the X axis gantry?

I did not measure that initially, but it was worth of remeasuring. I was measuring on the left Y-axis, so when the Z-slider was on the left, -0.14, somewhere in the middle, -0.12, and fully on the right, -0.10.

While it is not a big deal, but I bet it could be compensated digitally, if the flexing map is known.
