I have 3 thick (5”) chainsaw cut and well dried walnut cookies measuring about 21”x26”, obviously not perfectly round or any where close to perfectly 5” thick. I am using IDC Woodcrafts 1.5” surfacing bit .07” DOC 12000 rpm and 120 ipm, IOW the IDC specs for the bit. I have everything available for gen 1-1.7 kw redline spindle, stiffy, and MASSO controller. 7/1000 at a time to 0.65 inches per program takes about an hour. Any experienced safe and faster recommendations? I’d like to move onto my backlog of other projects. Thanks
What is your stepover? If you are making several passes to make it level and thinned out, I would set a higher stepover in your toolpath. Create a separate toolpath with a lower stepover for a final finishing pass.
I’m not entirely sure I understand your set up. But, I would first recommend a profile path around the perimeter to avoid chip out on the sides. Then I’d do 60% step over with 0.05 at 200ipm. Maybe 0.07 at 150ipm. 12K seems a little low to me – I generally run walnut at 16K. If you have a 1/2" shank then you can get a little more aggressive, but your spindle will limit your DOC before anything else becomes an issue.
