Gen 2 No Com from Windows laptop and Redline controller (solved, deleting the com port in device manager and reinstalling fixed)

I got my Gen 2 Elite last Thur 3/5/26 and have begun my adventure of assembly and commissioning this beautiful piece of equipment. Due to the delayed shipment of the “non-Redline HMI” batch 1 orders I had everything ready to receive this equipment. The unboxing and assembly went flawlessly as expected.
What was not expected on the 1.4.9 Hot-fix release of the Redline control software for Windows, was the intermittent ability of my Win 11 laptop to connect via the USB cable to the Redline controller. Trust me I have tried 3 excellent Win 11 laptops and 3 known good USB cables and they all have the same trouble connecting the the Controller. Because hope springs eternal I actually am able to connect 1 out of 10-20 times. Most of the time I get COM5 Failed and I jiggle the usb connector on the controller and/or just hold my mouth differently and the Real Time software connects and I do a little more set up. Today I was able to warm up my spindle using the "bacon strips" provided, Yeah!

Is anyone else experiencing this issue I have reached out to 1F support and haven't heard back but I am really wanting to put this problem to bed.

Thanks in advance, Steve

Hi Steve,
Support has responded back to your ticket the same day then followed up the next two days with no response. Can you check your spam?

We will most likely send a replacement motion controller as it sounds like your usb port has the issue.

Is it the same USB cord for all 3 laptops?

I ran into something very similar when setting up my machine. The intermittent COM connection usually points to either the USB driver not initializing cleanly in Windows 11 or the controller’s USB port being a little sensitive. Since you’ve already tried multiple laptops and cables, that rules out a lot. The fact that it sometimes connects when you move the cable makes me wonder if the USB port on the controller might be slightly loose or the connection just isn’t seating perfectly. It might also help to check Device Manager to see if the COM port appears and disappears when you plug in. Hopefully 1F support gets back to you soon, but you’re definitely not the only one who’s had to wrestle with the USB connection during initial setup.

Thanks Martacute1, The device manager is a good idea. I suspect the usb connector in the redline controller but…. Good to hear that I am not the only one struggling with USB connection , Steve

Have you tried a powered usb hub?

No but that is a good idea, I have run out of USB ports on my Win 11 brick and need one more so that is next but the device manager trick works a treat!

Thanks, Steve

Glad to hear that removing the com port in the device manager in windows, then reinstalling it fixed you up!

We will close your support ticket  Have fun carving!

I just received my 1F gen 2 elite Forman today, it was a long wait, got most of it together today, powered it up and got errors pertaining to the usb and no com port found, I rebooted the redline controller and HMI several times but still the same result. I also unplugged the usb cord several times and of coarse plugged back in , but still wouldn’t fine the com port. I’ll try again tomorrow I’m sure I have everything wired correctly, one other thing i received two of the wires that were marked the same x1 to x. So I assumed I could use that wire for the z1 to x on the controller, ldk if they are both wired the same, thanks for any replies
