Google local mills in your area.
Thanks “wood-mill” gets me results on Google even though I’m not from an English speaking country
Craigslist in your area.
If you have that where you are located.
Yes I agree with the previous commenter. google will help
What’s wrong with going to a wood yard?
I go to one of several hardwood suppliers.
Look up local saw mills. I’m lucky that there is one 5 minutes from me. All different types of exotic hardwoods. I buy it rough and then joint and plane myself, save $. The last wood I bought there was sassafras, it smells like fruit loops
Nothing, but already know about it
What size plane do you have
The DW735, 13 inch. Thing is awesome, have it connected to a bag in my garage
I have the same issue and i live in the middle of logging country and mills all around but all green no kiln dried material unless i order online which is no good i like to select my pieces for grain etc and online you never know what youre getting until it arrives and the big box stores are no good the selection is very slim and poor quality
lately i have been saving money by contacting contractors ive worked for and when they demo a place i go salvage doors and door frames etc from these older homes. but still i want some specific materials and theres no place to get kiln dried lumber for me locally
but 7 or 8 mills lol its crazy not one has kiln dried material. i cant wait 2 yrs for the green wood to cure either lol
one mill suggested i dry in my oven lol yeah for tiny projects you can do that but not for large projects
Some people get rid of solid doors a the tip and free online so might give that a go just went to a yard near by and he only does oak and chestnut but was a nice guy and wood was fairly dry just needs putting in door for a while. Some wood yards around here don’t have an office and if you aren’t buying half a forest of them they’re not interested
There are no saw mills around where I live. The only local option are Lowes and Home Depot. So I have turned to the web: The Wood Worker Source (https://www.woodworkerssource.com/) have been working out good for me. They have all types of wood and at a reasonable cost, much cheaper than the big box stores.
Thanks for the replies I built up the courage and rehearsed what I needed to say in french and luckily the guy and his brother spoke English he only does oak and chestnut but he let me pick out my piece and to say they obviously just deal with bulk orders he had the time for me just purchasing the odd slice. Where I live customer service is is a rarity business don’t care about new customers. Part culture part how the government runs stuff
I visited a local millwork company that does lots of custom work recently, as they had some maple 2x4’s that I needed. While there the manager let me go through their scrap pile and one-offs and scored some amazing wood for $20. Stuff too small for them, but perfect for us CNC folks.
Rockler store near you? They are also online and ship if needed. Also check for local custom cabinet shops. good luck
Good call. They just opened a store in south jersey but they do ship exotic lumber
I didn’t know a Rockler opened in NJ. THANK YOU for that info! I’ll be visiting soon.
