How would you do this? 2D or 3D?

Client is asking me to make this Wine Appetizer Plate (see attached pic). How would you do this? Would you model in 3D and then 3D rough & finish carve it? Or would you model it in 2D and cut it via traditional pocket and profile type toolpaths?

I’m proficient in Fusion and Vcarve Pro, so I could do it either way I think. I’m just wondering which way you think would be more efficient, I guess. I’m leaning towards 2D and traditional pocket and profile toolpaths, but the chamfered edges of the pockets with the smoothed/rounded tops & bottoms of the pockets is throwing me off a little bit.

Thoughts?

The simplest way would be with a dish cutting bit and simple pocket toolpath.
The exterior shape would be cut with an endmill then radius with a roundover bit with a hand router.
The other way would be to create molding toolpaths for the inside and outside edge profiles and pocket the middle with an endmill

We make a very similar item

We have an original Woodworker with BB controller and use Carveco

I would start with a bull nose bit and machine the groove around the glass slot and around the plate area to full depth using a profile cut

Then use an 1/4 " to machine the glass hole and the plate area using an area clearance tool path

Then 1/4" to cut out the shape and the glass slot breaking into the glass hole using a profile tool path.

Sand the edge if needed then use a bearing guided round over in a router table to ease the top and bottom edge.

I would laser the logo then a couple of coats of Danish Oil

Hope this helps

Same as Ken said. Should be super easy. I would use a chamfer rather than a round over on the inside, but moxnix.
