Ikea SKADIS Style Peg Board DIY

Anyone made a SKADIS style pegboard on their CNC? I need a custom sized board, so I decide to just make it my self. Looks like about 5mm thick material and the holes are 5mm x 15mm. Easy enough to create in Vectric.

My only concern right now is what material to use. I’m thinking 1/4”MDF or maybe 3/16” hardboard. Not sure how the hardboard will machine, but I think that will mostly like be what I go with.

I have not yet, but I found a Skadis generator on printables

I think 1/4” MDF with a plastic vaneer on it would be a good material to try this with first. Pretty sure you can get it at the big orange box store.

If you can swing it, ABS would be nice.

I got the file created in vectric. I’m not exactly sure how to go about the chamfers inside each slot. Difficult to tell how it looks in the preview.

@MIKEXYZ I can’t find that material. The closest thing I’ve found it 3/16 Hardboard at Menards. What is it called?

I just did a quick search and did not find the exact product I saw while in store.

I would bet money I saw 4x8 sheets of this type of stuff, but thicker, and without the pegboard holes. These images are from the Canadian Home Depot website.

It might be the type of thing that’s not stocked at all stores….?

There’s a white melamine hardboard refered to as case back.

It’s not to good for the cnc because like hardboard it gets fuzzy when you cut it

I found a piece of MDF at HD that has a “dry erase” surface on one side and “chalk board” on the other. MDF should machine well, but I worry about chipping. Want to use the black side, but will paint if needed.

I was able to get my Skadis boards cut and the two sided material worked fine, but I did have a couple of issue I need to sort before I remake them. I cut the slot depth close to the bottom with going through. The ran the chamfers. I flipped the material over and ran the chamfers again. No issue with chipping.

First issue, the slotted holes came out smaller than the dimensions in Vectric. The hole measure at about 4.5mm x 14.5mm, but the vectors in Vectric measure 5mm x 15mm. I can’t say I’ve ever made anything on my CNC where the measurements needed to be precise. Not sure if this a new problem or not. Any recommendation as to why this happened and how to fix it.

  • Had to add a -0..2mm offset and it cut to the correct size. No idea why I needed to do this
  • This didn’t make any difference. Onefinity tool path post process says (inch) and I don’t see a metric variant. I typically use inch, but somethings are easier in metric, like this project. Other measurement were accurate, just the hole was incorrect
  • Confirmed the bit diameter
  • Confirmed the file was correct
  • Confirmed it repeated the result on two different tool path type (pocket, profile)

Second issue, the bit dulled rather quickly. Using a Whiteside R1600 bit on setting 5 on the Mikita router. Used suggested feed rates from Whiteside. Brand new bit was burning about halfway through.

Appreciate your feedback.

Any chance you could share the Vectric file if you still have it? Looking to take down my existing pegboard and add some slots to it so I can use both and it’d save me some time.
