Long carve stops halfway through

I attempted a pretty detailed 2.5D carve today on my Elite Foreman, and everything was fine until I hit line 150681 of about 380k. The file loaded fine onto the flash drive and loaded fully in the preview. There also doesn’t seem to be anything unusual about that line:

N150681 G1 X-15.384 Y80.415 Z-3.010

I tried cycle start again and it jogs back to the last position but then just sits there and doesn’t execute any lines. It still shows the time elapsed but now shows 0%:

Job Time: 01: 13:10, 0%

I was thinking about splitting the file since it’s quite large, but it didn’t seem to be necessary until it just stopped. Anyone seen something like this? Or have ideas on what might be the cause?

Thanks.

I tried starting from that line number and I got an ERROR: Can’t read file. I was able to reload the entire file and then have it start from that line, but unfortunately I must not have done the resume correctly. Everything looked good and it said I’d need to hit cycle start a couple of times, which I did, but then it plunged in a different location and wrecked the carve.

I’ll try splitting the file for the next go-around, but any advise on how to avoid this or correct in the future would be much appreciated!

The Masso forum is much better equipped for this question. But I have had this type of behavior. Really big files and/or questionable USB drives is the most likely culprit. Solution (for me anyway) is/was…

Lower capacity, higher quality USB drives. Take the one that came with your machine and throw it in the garbage. Slow things down a bit, and if you can, increase your stepover without loosing cut quality/detail. And depending on your post and ability to edit it, or the program itself, eliminating redundant code.

i have not had mine stop due to file size, But i have heard others had a problem. I cant look into masso forum, i never signed up. But i was having a problem with mine stopping for no reason and code was perfect. I finally seen that the code on my screen would disappear for a sec and then come back, but the machine had stopped. instead of resuming I worked on finding out. Mine was the cheap jump drive that came with the machine. Since i chunked that one and replace with a quality one, no more problems. my machine was only a couple weeks old when that happened. cheap easy fix if that is what is happening.

Good luck bro

Interesting - thanks. I know Masso says to use a name brand drive - it came with a Sandisk, which I thought should be good but I will get a new one and try that.

yes sir, I got a double pack of the PNY 32GB on amazon for 10 or 15 bucks.

what was happening is the original one would disconnect for a second.

could someone tell me what a really high quality is regarding thumb drives? what type does masso require and what size is best?

I can’t speak toward which brand has best “quality”, and I think that turns into a Ford vs etc. conversation real quick. The most universal advice I’ve been given by those who know things I don’t, is lower capacity, and keeping it clean, are the best ways to mitigate hiccups and errors in the data.

thanks I will keep that in mind

just as good a quality you can find, I prefer the PNY brand as they are usually dependable, I have personally never had one fail and they are priced right, but it is MY preference. Before i switched from sandisk to the PNY i had a couple of the sandisk fail. now that was not on the machine but with computers.

the masso will only recognize a 32GB or smaller, and also needs to be a USB 2.0.
Supposedly from what i read on it, Masso will not recognize a USB 3.0
I have not tried that but is what i read in the masso manual.

there are many quality brands out there. just go to amazon and search for 32GB USB jump drive 2.0 and get the one you like. and try it.

I had the same issue, and got in touch with Peter, the Masso guy.

I forgot most of the details unfortunately.

What I remember is he strongly advised to use only SANDISK USB.

Here is more useful info about formatting.

Better USB drives solved the problem in my case

I started with using a thumb drive but quickly gave it up for two reasons. The first was that the USB port wasn’t convenient to reach so it was a pain plugging in the thumb drive. But more importantly, I am not a fan of plugging and unplugging something hundreds of times because eventually you will wear out the connection. Because of that, I started using the wireless connection and it works flawlessly. And downloading files and folders is super easy from my computer. Way better than using a thumb drive.

There’s lots of name branded cheap Chinese clones available everywhere. If you buy one make sure to buy one from a large company. If buying from Amazon I only buy if it’s fulfilled by Amazon. In the US I’ve had good luck with the large camera shops. WIreless, as Rex said, is another option.
