Re-Running a Text Engrave Carve on Masso

This might be obvious to some, but I figured it could help someone out there.

I recently ran an engraving job created in Fusion 360 that had multiple layers of text with varying depths on my Elite. Overall, everything cut to the depth I expected—except for some of the smaller text, which didn’t engrave as deeply as I’d hoped.

After scratching my head for a bit, I figured I’d try simply setting the Z-depth slightly lower and rerunning the job. It worked perfectly! Here’s exactly what I did:

Steps:

  1. I picked a spot on the project that was already cut out and lowered the Z-axis by about 1/64" (roughly 0.015"). I used this as a reference to get the depth I wanted.
  2. On the Masso controller, I set the new Z height using that new Z point.
  3. I tapped Rewind and then Start.
  4. The machine reran the exact same toolpath, just slightly deeper—and the carve came out just how I wanted. The only caveat was the 2nd run started right away spinning the bit as soon as I touched start and did not move to my tool setter like it does when i load the gcode file for the first time. Nevertheless the carve worked as expected.

Note:
I did not reload the G-code. I simply rewound and restarted it. The only change was the updated Z-height, which allowed for a deeper cut.

The reason I’m sharing this is because I’ve always wondered: if I had reloaded the G-code and run it again normally, would it have worked the same way? I’m still unclear about how Masso handles saved XYZ positions. Do they persist after a reboot, or does everything reset? I haven’t been able to get a definitive answer on these things.

Hope this helps someone trying to fine-tune their engravings!

Rusty,
Yep you did it correctly. It doesn’t go to the tool setter unless the Masso prompts you to install a different bit.

Thanks Jim
Its sometimes a crapshoot for me when things like this happen
