Redline spindle maintenance FAQ

Is there a FAQ file for Redline spindle maintenance ?

I’m particularly interested in what products Onefinity recommends for cleaning and lubricating the collet, nut and spindle taper.

Thanks,

Mike

From my experience there is a lot of information available on this topic, and while specific product recommendations may vary, the main best practices often remain the same - I am guessing Onefinity may suggest focusing on those.

Cleaning all parts with an air blast, cloth, or brass bristle brush to remove debris, and with a cleaner that does not damage the metal surfaces or leave a residue.

Inspecting all components after cleaning, and replacing collets that are visibly damaged. Collets being the least hard and (sometimes) least expensive of the tool holding components are made to be wear items and replaced regularly (often after 400 - 600 hours use is mentioned) .

Lubricating the tapered sliding surfaces of all components - NEVER the inner collet bore or tool shank - with a very thin coat of an anti-corrosion lubricant that prevents rust, metal seizing, particle buildup/sticking, and displaces water.

I have an ATC spindle with ISO20 toolholders and ER! and ER20 collets. The products I use for regular maintenance are IPA for cleaning and Boeshield K9 for anti-rust and lubricating. They work well for me, but I am a hobby user with only a few years machining experience at this point, so please keep that in mind.

Thanks for the detailed reply.

I already have both alcohol and Boeshield in my shop so that’s ideal.

I had never used a spindle prior to buying my Onefinity. It seems odd there’s no official info on maintenance of the Redline spindle, at least not that I could find. In the meantime, I think your suggestion of following “best practices” is a good one.

Thanks,
Mike

You are welcome. Please keep in mind this is just what I do, and I imagine others will join the conversation to share their favourite products and maintenance routines.

In the picture framing shops i worked in we always cleaned the guide bars on our panel and mat cutters (just like the ones on the 1F) with Ronson lighter fluid. It cuts sticky stuff like wood pitch, alevaporates quickly (naptha) and leaves juuuuust enough oil to prevent rust or oxidation. I also am a fan of Nervrdull, having used it on chrome on an in the water sailboat to keep it slick.
