Steppers in the front

I have recently got my x50 journeyman machine and working on my setup. I think I prefer to have the motors up in the front rather than in the back. Is this possible? What is involved? Any downsides of doing this?

I have the Pro version, so that one Y-rail now has a cable chain. In this case I will have to put this rail to the right. Right?

I had my x50 Journeyman setup that way. It’s not difficult. Here’s the video instructions.

Great. Thank you.

Why did you want the steppers in the front?
Any downsides?

I wanted the wires in the back so I’m not bumping into them. I needed to get longer wires or extensions though; keep that in mind.

OK, thank you. Yes, I got the extension wires with the machine. I guessed that they will be needed.

I have the same reason. Also, I think that the work area will be more central to the table, rather than at the very edge. Do you think that the position of the work area matters?

I liked having mine close to the front edge, but not right at the edge. I didn’t want my motors overhanging the front. Most of my work was done at the front and to the left, but I think that’s personal preference. Definitely want to stay near the front though so I don’t have to reach. It’s not that easy to reach the far back side of my table, but I’m only 5’8" so those with longer arms may not care.

Here’s what my setup looked like.
