Tool setter issue after recent HMI update

Having a new problem since I updated the HMI to the latest version, 1.5.14. I have the tool setter and set it up some time ago and it’s been working perfectly until the update, now it’s having problems. The tool is way above the work piece after changing tools. I tried to set up the tool setter again, and again, but the same thing is happening. The image shows a cut I am doing as a test piece. The outline cuts fine as there is no tool change required. There are supposed to be pockets and are cut using a different tool. After changing the tool, the photo shows what happens. Any ideas? Guess I should mention that I have the Redline HMI.

o couldn’t help but notice the clamps you are using Rockler unless I miss my guess. here is a better (lower profile set) take a look costs you nothing to look and can save you money on broken bits too.

Try resetting up the tool setter going through the wizard again.

Sorry for my delayed reply, busy with work and summer stuff around the house. Anyway, I made a stupid simple file, a circle with a square in the middle and 1 bit for the circle and a different bit for the square cut so I didn’t ruin an actual project. I ran through the set up 4 times in total, different bits, homed it so many times it knows my street address but still having the issue. Not sure what to check next.

Are you certain the tool number loaded on the controller matches the tool number in the file?

If you haven’t already done so, I’d suggest re-measuring your spindle length offset, lower left hand corner in the screen shot:

Yes, I took some time and set up the tool database in Vcarve with the bits I use most often. I’m sure I’m using the correct bit for a particular cut as far as the toolpath was designed. Is there a way to revert the HMI to a previous version? I see an icon that may be that option in the upper right corner of the screen but I didn’t click on it as I don’t know for sure what it is and I don’t want to make it worse. Thanks for your suggestions thus far!

I also had to redo the setup after the update. But from receiving my machine the tool setter was off from the zero on the touch probe. It appears to be a greater distance off now. The touch probe is perfect setting the z zero the touch probe is not. I looked for a way to calibrate to get them both matching with no luck. I never use it use the tool setter because I don’t trust the outcome. Not sure how it’s working with machines with atc which I do not have.

Update
I rechecked the difference between the touch probe and the tool setter and they are within an acceptable amount. When I did the check I made sure both were in the same location when I checked with the paper test. But I still did have to do the setup of the tool setter after the update as it was way off.

I just checked https://realtimecnc.com/ and they have available for d/load older versions. I think I’ll d/load 1.4.18 and install it in the HMI. If the HMI won’t allow that, I’ll reflash it with the Raspberry Pi backup flash card I made then install 1.4.18 and hope that that gets me back to operational status!

So I was ready to revert to a previous version of the HMI firmware. I went to realtimecnc.com to get a prior version which by the way, would require a reflash of the HMI to go backwards. Anyway, I saw they released an update on 7/16/2026, version 1.6.3, so I thought I’d try that before flashing the HMI. Well, long story short, it worked, not sure what they changed, but it worked. The tool setter is now working almost as expected. The reason I say almost is after a tool change, it’s cutting about an 1/8" too shallow. For what I’m currently doing, that’s not a huge deal as I can make that adjustment in the software. But being a self proclaimed perfectionist, I had to try and figure out why. If anyone can answer this, I’d certainly appreciate it - I have my HMI set to Imperial (inches) and when I went to check the probe setting thickness I saw it’s in MM. Does that affect the actual machining depth since I design my projects in inches and the HMI is set to inches as well? Thanks!
