Upgrades: it's only money

My X-50 Journeyman (July 2022) came before so many options and upgrades that I’m lost. If I’m reading the Onefinity site correctly, the differences that could improve my machine are the Stiffy rail and the Masso controller. (Are there others I’m overlooking?) I don’t need a laser or 4th axis, but the ATC is tempting.

“Toronto” measured the deflection with / without the stiffy, but I can’t tell whether I’d notice the improvement in my applications. (I’m milling brass sheets to make clock dials and I do some random work in MDF and pine as substrates for veneering). I don’t run at high IPM. With the brass I break a lot of bits, which has many causes. Is the stiffy a major benefit for that?

Since 2022, Onefinity software and firmware upgrades needed time to work out the ‘bugs’ which made me put off the Masso. Are the bugs out yet? Is this a ‘gotta have’ improvement, or a mixed blessing?

The images are works in progress.

In my opinion, given the type of work you describe, I don’t think a stiffy would show a noticeable difference in your case. It really only comes into play when you’re pushing the machine. If I’m in your shoes, and looking to upgrade something, I’d start with the Masso. No bugs.

I’ve run my elite foreman with and without the stiffy. I can hear and feel a difference but not in the cut quality. However, the point at which the stiffy starts making a difference is already harder than I run my machine anyway.

I added the stiffy to my X50 Journeyman and I can see a bit of difference. However it’s mainly when I push bits really hard. If I try to hog out a lot of wood in one pass, say a 1/2" flat endmill at 160 imp with a depth of cut over 1/2". It did reduce the amount it ‘chatters’. But I also have my 1F on 2 1/2" aluminum blocks so I can use the full amount of Z travel. That means the spindle is further away and has more twisting torque being applied to the bearings. If you don’t see a problem with it vibrating when cutting chances are you don’t need a stiffy. It’s not expensive though. Not like upgrading to the Masso.

I absolutely LOVE the MASSO. It takes the machine to a whole new level of capability…not to mention the ease of customizing your setup.

When it comes to the stiffy, can you really have too much stiffness? Rhetorically speaking, of course not. In fact, I’d argue that the moment you start noticing a lack of stiffness, you’ve already got a problem—one that only a properly positioned stiffy can fix. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to maximize rigidity where it matters most? With my X-35 rails and a full-sized spindle, I have no doubt the added stiffy is keeping things nice and firm, preventing any unwanted deflections. It’s not just about staying upright under pressure—it also helps in the horizontal plane, reducing side-to-side wobble while holding up “you know what.” If stiffness weren’t a concern, why would they even offer this as an option? Personally, I think it should be standard on all machines. But hey, I’m a sucker for overkill—so take that with a grain of salt (or maybe a whole shaker).

Now, about the Masso—this is less about raw performance and more about features. Sure, the Elite series machines cranked the speed dial to 11 with steeper pitch screws and beefier, faster steppers, but what you’re really getting is a grown-up, dare I say commercial-grade control system. One with enough bells and whistles to (hopefully) keep most folks from flooding the forum with “Why can’t we have [insert feature here]?” requests.

And since you brought up the Pandora’s box of “bugs”—yep, Masso has them. Buildbotics has them. I have them. My phone has them. And I’m convinced those cursed stoplights that turn red right as I approach have the worst ones of all. If you’re waiting for a bug-free CNC controller, you might as well hold off on buying a new car until they make a perfect one of those, too. In other words, don’t hold your breath.

Oh, and that clock you made? Absolutely fantastic. Can’t wait to see more, especially with different designs!
