I notice when I home the X Axis that there are several millimeters of space left at the end of travel after the homing sensor makes contact.
Is there a reason that this space needs to exist or can I adjust the homing tab on the axis to gain a bit more travel on the axis. I would like to be able to cut parts that are a full 48".
Yes, this is called ‘backoff’ space. This ensures the sensor aren’t being triggered when not homing as fully against the front would cause the sensor trigger to rest inside the homing sensor, which can cause issues as they would be ‘engaged’ in the software.

Thanks, but that was not my question exactly. I am wondering about the length of the piece on the gantry that engages the sensor. When it engages the sensor the gantry has about a half inch before it would hit the closest y axis component. Is this 1/2" accessible by shortening the piece that engages the sensor?
