I do a lot of radio systems work professionally and even more with software define radios. Because they produce radio frequencies and antennas are designed to pick up extremely weak electromagnetic fields, EMI is a constant battle to get the best signal. I say that to say, I have learned, sometimes it’s easier to defend your system better than it is to eliminate all the sources of EMI.
I upgraded my Onefinity from BB, so I had already grounded and bonded my dust collection system. Even with the dust system off and disconnected, I was getting errors however. The real telltale for me was when I would turn the wifi on, and half the time, the screen would flicker and the touch screen would loose orientation. That monetary pulse of Wi-Fi signal was enough to cause issue. As touch screens are very sensitive to electrical fields, I suspected the screen was my issue. I pulled off my screen, and at least the power cable (far left cable in the picture) seems to be completely un-shielded. Without taking apart the HDMI (far right cable) or USB cable, I can’t speak to their shielding. The power supply inside the HMI is unshielded as well. My guess is the screen cables were picking up common mode current from somewhere (like the Wi-Fi radio) and causing issues.
There is enough room at the bottom of the cables to snap on some ferrite beads and still fit inside the case. If it doesn’t work, they don’t cause any harm unless you break something trying to get them in/on the system. I happen to have some USB sized ones laying around, so I did throw one on each cable. I DON’T recommend unplugging the screen like I did. The Micro-HDMI cable into the Raspberry PI is a pain. Best to have someone hold the screen for you while you snap on the ferrite chokes.
My system has been on for 18 hours, I have done a few carves and just left the system sitting on, and have had no issues. No returning to screen problems or messages about stepper motor errors. Honestly, it seems like something they should have done in manufacturing, or install cables with built in ferrite chokes like what you seen on laptop power supplies.
I can’t guarantee this will fix your system, and no idea how Onefinity feels this effects their warranty. But in my case, them minimal cost (you can get 24 ferrite chokes for $10 on amazon, even cheaper for aliexpress) it was worth the end of frustration.
