So I had a dilemma, I live in aridzona, and I previously had a HY watercooled spindle that did me proud. I wanted to use the redline VFD, and yes it runs the HY 2.2KW watercooled spindle flawlessly, no issues. I did see that Redline is now offering a watercooled spindle option, but this hybrid works for me, and so if mine ever peters out, I’ll just get that spindle. I paired this with finally a good watercooler so my spindle is nice and cool and no more ice baths for my ugly water tank.
Just a heads up if you have the odd situation like me.
I’m going to be upgrading my OG bilbotics controller in the near future to the Redline. I also have the Huanyang VFD and spindle. Were you able to wire the HY Vfd to the VFD port on the redline controller? If so what connector dose it take? Where did you get reliable Information?
Dave If i were you I would talk to redline directly for the info you need, since onefinity only supports the redline machines but redline will have the info you need. Don’t blame Onefinity, they have enough to do answering questions about connecting their own stuff without trying to be the support for other manufacturers.

We do not provide support on hooking up aftermarket accessories to the controller. Our best advice is, see how our Redline spindle kit is connected and figure out a way to mimic it.
I tried for a while to get my HY VFD to work with the redline. I even looked at all the settings they use for the redline spindle and translated it to the HY VFD. It never seemed to work.
The one setting that the redline VFD used that wasn’t supported in the HY VFD was the bit parity. I think the redline asked for 8n2, but the HY only could do 8n1. From my reading, it shouldn’t matter, but that’s the one setting I could translate.
I gave up at that point. I ended up buying the pwn cnc and that is basically plug and play with the redline controller.
You could probably just buy the VFD from pwncnc and use your own spindle. That should work just fine. I just bought both from them because I was using a 0.8kw spindle and decided to just upgrade to their 1.5kw spindle and VFD.
I am about to pull a plug on getting the whole kit from pwn cnc. The price difference is enormous compared to Redline, and not to mention that this is a second purchase of the totally usable spindle with VFD.
Did you get their water- or air-cooling version spindle? And in the controller settings - did you chose ‘Redline Spindle’ to connect?
I got the air cooled version. I decided on that because the cut itself as well as my dust collector is MUCH more noisy than the fan on the spindle. So then it’s one less thing to worry about.
Yup, you just choose Redline Spindle, change 2 settings on the VFD, and it works. Directions were very clear, and arguably, more simple than the redline VFD which has you change so many settings on the VFD (at least that’s what the video shows).
The redline spindles ship preprogrammed to your controller, so no settings need to be changed.
The videos show how to change them from one controller to another (like Buildbotics to redline).
Plus it’s plug and play, supported, and warrantied.
We do not offer technical assistance for aftermarket products so you’d be in your own if you have issues.
The feedback on not supporting any other spindle has made me want to leave the Onefinity ecosystem, hence why I bought the pwn spindle. After this experience, I actually wanted to switch to the masso instead of the redline controller just because of how Onefinity and redline seem to be trying hard to push everyone to their own ecosystem rather than supporting other open standards.
I understand wanting to create a seamless integration, but it’s starting to feel like Apple where you are actively blocking others from your system.
I have been a customer of Onefinity since day 1, when they ran their very first Kickstarter campaign. I have just upgraded from the BB controller to the Redline controller. I am very glad that Onefinity and Realtime CNC have decided to make it possible again to run the Huangyang VFD with their software and hardware.
That seems pretty cool, and though I really do get that you’re not offering support, I would just like to know how to get the connection between the Redline HMI and the Huan Yang VFD. Does the I/0 port work with the plug that connected the VFD to the BB controller? Or is a new cable required to run from the VFD port on the motion controller to the VFD?
There are two connections available for the VFD on our RTCNC controllers. There is a dedicated 4-pin connector on the I/O panel and the pins are duplicated on the DB-25 connector. For most HY VFDs, the pins on their terminal blocks are labelled RS+ and RS-. These connect to RS-485+ and RS-485- on the RealTime CNC controller (either the DB-25 or the dedicated 4-pin connector, but not both).

We provide the part numbers for the mating connectors if you want to connect to the 4-pin VFD connector. The other option is to use a DB-25 terminal block connector.
Another important consideration is connecting the ground. In most cases, we suggest connecting the ground of the RS communication interface on the VFD to the ground of the controller. This prevents the common mode voltage (i.e. the difference in ground potential between the two units) from floating outside the acceptable range of the RS-485 transceiver (usually about 7V) which can damage the chip.
You will have to check your VFD manual to identify the correct ground connection on your HY VFD. On the one we purchased for development and testing we determined that ACM (analog common) was actually the ground of the RS-485 transceiver in the VFD.
If your VFD was already set up for RS-485 communication, it should work one everything is connected. Here is a summary of the VFD parameters to check if the communication is not working.
PD000 = 0 (Unlock parameters for modifications)
PD001 = 2 (Set VFD control source to RS-485)
PD002 = 2 (Set VFD speed control to RS-485)
PD163 = 1 (Set communication address of RS-485 to “1”)
PD165 = 3 (Set communication format to 8 bit, no parity)
PD001 = 1 (Lock new parameters so they cannot be changed, optional but recommended)

Just coming back here to take back my upset words about Onefinity (you guys still rock, even more now), to thank @RTCNC for the detailed explanation, aaaaaAAAannnddd… to confirm that it works! When I enter a command in the Redline MDI, the spindle actually spins.
Once I have the new wasteboard installed, I will run a test carve to see if everything is dialed in. But for now, I am super happy and I can’t wait to get carving again.

I have updated to the new firmware version that includes the HY VFD. I have been using my water cooled spindle for a couple of weeks and it has performed flawlessly so far.
