Mine is still going strong 2 yrs later after about burning it up. Some suggestions:
- I use a 4 flute 1” IDC Woodcraft surfacing bit. Speed 2-2.5 on dial, DOC no more than .02 per pass (which I find usually flattens most projects and spoilboard). If I need more, reprobe bit, run again, or anticipate multiple passes and build that in to the toolpath.
- 150IPM in Hardwood, 200+ IPM in Pine or other softwoods.
- Find cleanest surfacing with 40% stepover, however, Makita doesn’t seem to mind 70% stepover.
- My understanding is the Makita makes its maximum torque on the 2-2.5 dial setting.
- Use common sense with speeds, feeds, and specifically DOC with your smaller bits.
- If your a hobbyist an extra pass and a few minutes more doesn’t matter. If a production shop, no doubt, a spindle is the way.
Hope my experience will help others using a Makita router keep it alive and and creating!
