Dos any one have a hack for Oramasking a poly rough sawn surface for a V carve and then painting?
Making a sign.
I have found Oramask works best on clean, smooth, surfaces. There were a few times where I successfully applied a thin coat of shellac or poly, with the mask sticking very well to that.
I know this is an “old post” just wondering what you ended up doing.
I have done 2 things in this situation where I was given a rough sawn board. It’s not as easy as making a surface v-carve, but it looked great.
This will not work unless you have some extra material to flatten and resaw.
I tried rough cut board to size.
Jointer and planed 2 sides.
Sliced up about 18x8” remaining stock into 3 18x8 pieces. Thickness sanded to 1/4” thick and put it aside. Used similar scrap wood for sizing and testing.
Essentially all I did was V carve and cut out letters then created pockets that the letters fit in.
Main board was finished and left rough.
There was a little twist too, so to level final was attached with shims and hot glue, as well as ca tape and glue blocks around the perimeter.
Test letters were painted & finished, pocket tolerance was dialed to accommodate paint and finish on letters. in the end letters looked like they were v-carved and painted in place. It’s not perfect close up, but if you’re not right up picking it apart it looked good.
This would’ve also be more noticeable with a script type font, since you would need to leave a border around lettering to hold everything together.
Glueing in the letters was fun. I had one pocket I made a little too deep, sawdust in the pocket and little glue can be useful to bring it up to level.
I’ve also done a rough box where I just mounted the lid as level as possible pocketed a flat spot in the rough surface to mask and v-carve. I did not like/care for the look, but client liked it and all they wanted was a rough looking box, which is not easy when one side is left rough.
