Curious if any of you had success with masking pieces after painting them in order to paint the carved paths after OF has done its thing? Tried masking tape and that was a disaster…
I use Oracal. It works great for this.
One tip is to do a quick shot of lacquer or poly after carving before you paint the final color. That will prevent any bleed into the wood fibers.

Oramask 813 for me as well. I sand + laquer + sand before I apply the mask to my stock. Carve then laquer (or shellac) again before paint.
So I can paint base, mask, carve, use lacquer here? And then paint carved part?
I think I might seal the paint on the base before the mask depending on what type of paint you are using, but overall, yep; you’ve got it!
Duck brand shelf liner at Walmart, $1.94/roll.
Works great.
Hi, just wondering if you’ve ever had oramask stick to well and pull off some of the clear coat and paint when pulling off.
Trying to find a solution for this, cause touching up after kinda ruins it. Would using a heat gun over it just before pulling it off help?
I always use a squeegee when applying Oramask and I’ve never had an issue of it pulling up finish. I am always careful to ensure that the finish is properly applied, cured, and dry before masking.
I have applied Oramask on raw Baltic birch plywood and it definitely pulled up wood fibers when I removed it.
A heat gun may help for removal but in my limited experience it also causes some of the glue to remain on the surface which you then have to clean off.
Sorry for the delay in responding.
I just saw this now. Thank you for the info. Very helpful
