Replaced Z-Slider and cables - Z Axis Shuttering

Need assistance troubleshooting BB (v1.6.6) Pro Journeyman, 80mm PwnCNC spindle. We had an unfortunate learning experience when laser is left unattended. Long story short, a quick restroom break and snack resulted in a fire. Main damage was too laser, z-slider/motor, and drag chain cabling. Replaced all today with new parts and cables.

X & Y and the Spindle are operating normally. However, the new z-slider and motor will not home. If try to jog, it just shutters - see attached vids. Have confirmed wiring connections are correct and Motor 3 config for Z-20. When powered off, I can move the Z up/down -feels normal.

I isolated the z-axis with the x cable to test, same result on Z, though X works normally with same cable. I don’t believe the issue is in the cables. I am at a loss on further troubleshooting steps.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Check the DIP pin settings
Could be one is in the wrong position

UPDATE:

I have a new set of cables, still in plastic. Used those to bypass new drag chain cables.

1 - Ran new cables directly from M3 to Z axis motor - same issue.
2 - Ran new cables from M3 directly to X axis motor - no issue, works normally. I could move the X axis left/right using the Z-axis up/down controls.
3 - Ran new cables from M1 to Z axis motor - same issue.

I have bee unable to locate info on physical DIP pins. Did reconfirm config for Z-20/M3 reconciles to setting 1F states in their docs.

I have always noticed a slight high pitched noise when the motors are running. However, that sound seems to be louder and higher pitched on the new Z-20 slider motor. Thinking the new z-slider motor is faulty?? I just don’t feel like this is a cable/connection issue.

You are bypassing the “middle” cable with the required cross over, which is giving you the symptoms you see.
See this faq for clarification Support: How to determine if a wire or motor is damaged

If you are using aftermarket drag chains and aftermarket wiring, I’d replace those with our official drag chain kit with preinstalled wiring.

DIP pins blue switches are located under the plastic Motor cover. You need to verify that the settings are configured correctly for your machine.

He has a open loop controller (bb) , so dip switch settings does not apply in his case.

Thank you for the response. All cabling/drag chains I am using are from 1F. Which, prior to the fire, I was using 1F cables/drag chains. No curly cable supplied by 1F. Is that expected? I apologize for the repeated questions. I obviously am missing something here. There was no curly z-cable prior to the fire. Is there another cable I need for the BB that is not included in the drag chain pack up?

Ok, found the original curly cable and plugged it in between the new cables that came in the 1F drag chain and the z-motor. Issue resolved, the z-axis works as expected.

Appears the cross-over cable in the drag chain is defective?
