Revisiting Dust Collection for 4x4 Elite G2

With the Suck It - SM (Gen 2) Dust Shoe supporting a 2.5in host, that leaves me with two options… Use existing dust collector (Harvey G700 Dust Processor) or go with a Festool or one of the quiet Dewalt Shop vacs. With the G700, I could drop to 2.5in at the blast gate or try to 3D print a 2.5in to 4in adapter so I can run 4in right to the spindle. Although going with 2.5in increases static pressure and decreases efficiency. Alternatively I could use a shop vac… either Festool or one of the quiet Dewalts which do well with static pressure; I could get a 15 ft 2.5in hose and try to come up with a boom that will support that relatively stiff hose. I do risk burning up the shop vac, be that Festool or pretty much any shop vac out there. Not sure which way to move on this… thoughts or suggestions? I know this topic has been discussed several times, but I have yet to find one really good thread that walks through all the options.

I burned up a shopvac. I also have a festool dust collector (theirs is not a vac, it’s designed as a dust collector - more volume, less suction than a vac). I didn’t burn that one up but I have moved on to using my big dust collector. I have a 4” to 2 1/2” step down (via a Magfit connector) into a 15ft antistatic hose into the Suckit. I haven’t noticed any issues with either the DC or the OF as a result of the hose step down.

My set up is similar to @JimHatch, I have a Oneida Supercell running 4in duct to a 2.5 reducer to a hose to my OF, haven’t seen any static related issued before or after I bonded my ducting.

Do you have any pics of your setup where you have the reducer mounted? I think I am leaning towards using the G700 with a reducer, with 2.5 right to the spindle. I understand the ID to 2.5in, do you have a coupler?

The reducer I used came in a dust collection kit I got with the 4” piping, it didn’t fit to the blast gate so I had to get a plumbing fitting to adapt it :laughing:

The only change I’d make if I was to do it over was to put the hose drop closer to the center of the machine with an automatic blast gate and avoid loop behind the gantry. I removed the Rowdy Roman hose boom as it was causing interference between the gantry and wall at times.

I was afraid of the shop vac burning up, I guess I need to take that off the table. The Festool vacs can’t be run continuously either.

Did you dedicate to this? SuperCell is good a high pressure and high volume… I have been considering a separate dust collector.

Did you 3D print the boom? How does it mount? That 2.5in host looks good, the 4in might be overkill after looking at this. Btw, super clean install!

Which Festool dust collector? The largest hose they have is a 50mm (roughly 2in), 5M I believe.

The supercell serves my whole single car garage shop, three drops, one for the CNC, one at the mitre saw, and one for my workbench with the table saw, router, and sander. I only use a max of 2 drops at any given time since it’s only me in the shop.

I really like the supercell but it does generate a fair bit of heat, my shop will go up a degree (C) or two in 10 minutes of running it.

This boom works really well!

I think the boom works well if you have the hose going down off the side or back of the table and have space behind the machine, if you don’t have those then IMO it’s not optimal.

rowdy roman stuff is great I also have a 65 mm swinger dust boot on another machine that works great
