Was doing some routine maintenance on the rails and ball screws when this spider popped out of one of the mounting screw holes to say Hi. It sat there like that and watched me for a few minutes.
While I’m not afraid of spiders, and these in particular are not usually aggressive, I’m sure none of us want to get bit by one for surprising it. Just a friendly reminder to check around your machine before each new use
looks like a young tegenaria domestica. Very useful animals in the household, eat harmful insects. You see them rarely wander around, ususally after moulting or when they are looking for a place for a new funnel net. They spend most of their lives in a funnel-shaped web which is usually stretching across the corner between two walls, from which signal threads emanate with which they sense passing prey.
Not an uncommon sight in my shop. I make a point of not bothering them and they return the favour. I think they help keep down the all too plentiful flies and mosquitoes. Better than coming into the shop to find a fly embedded in your finish you left to dry overnight.
