I have a pretty stout dust collection system - a Oneida Supercell Turbo. My dust collection boot brush gets sucked inward and makes the boot useless. Are there stiffer “bristles” we can get for this thing?
I have been getting this with the longer bristles. The shorter bristles don’t have this problem for me.
I’ll toss the shorter ones on today and see if it helps - thanks!
I got some brush seals for my garage door a while back that have some very stiff bristles. I wonder if they could be modified for a dust boot. They have an aluminum base instead of plastic though….
I too have a Onieda Supercell (non-turbo) and have found the longer bristles aren’t useful. I’ve toyed with the idea of setting my blast gate at less than 100% open, but in reality the short bristles work fine in most cases.
I’ve even gone so far as to remove the bristles all together when plunging deep enough into the wood that I risk grounding the bristle ring against the top of the work piece, and it still collects “most” of the chips.
Well I just tried the short bristles and it sucks them up too. I imagine it will probably get most of the dust without bristles the way this thing sucks. This thing is just too much of an animal!
I have the Harvey G700 and have experienced the same issue with both the short and long brushes. I have opened another gate and also adjusted the vacuum power as the Harvey has an adjustable power through a VFD knob on the front. When I lower the power enough to keep the bristles down, the dust is not collected. Kind of a catch 22. I am also looking for stiffer bristles or a different boot altogether. Another thing that I found on the forum, was someone suggested turning the bristles out, which has helped a little. I tried one other thing that really worked well, I used painters tape and zip ties to “Create” new brushes, inside of the 1" brush. Think of a zip tie ring at the bottom and verticle ties going to the top with tape on the inside. The stiffness of the tape really helped draw the dust in and keep the bristles out of the way. I ended up removing it for another project, and so continue my search.
So far every dust boot has a setup for the 2.5 hose with an adapter to the 4", which I believe creates a much higher static pressure at the point of collection, hence the bristles being pulled up.
Has anyone come across a boot with the true 4 inch Hose connection?
What I think will work better than anything I have seen so far would be a larger diameter brush ring, something closer to 4 inches instead of 3 inches.
The only thing with that is I am not a fan of the TPU bristles, but there is a blank piece and you can add your own bristles
Here is a link to 0.010 thick bristles - be aware they can hold up your Z travel if you aren’t careful - they are that thick - McMaster-Carr
I am coming over from a metal machine shop type background so some stuff we used aren’t suitable for wood and these hobby machines, some are fine as long as you are careful or pay attention.
Awesome, thanks for the input. I’ll definitely check it out and let you know how it works.
